CHAPTER 7 — The Woman Everyone Buried Came Back to Claim the Empire

The woman in white stepped out of the limousine without a single bodyguard touching her.
She didn't need protection.
Every armed man surrounding the estate lowered his weapon the moment she appeared.
Even Jack's surviving soldiers hesitated.
Some slowly bowed their heads.
Others simply looked away.
Jack stood frozen.
His lips parted as one word escaped.
"...Mother."
Evelyn looked between them in disbelief.
"This is impossible."
Twenty-two years earlier, the entire city had attended Isabella Carson's funeral.
Her coffin had been lowered into the ground.
Her death certificate had been signed.
Her grave still stood in one of Chicago's oldest cemeteries.
Yet here she was.
Alive.
Elegant.
Untouched by time.
She smiled gently.
"My son..."
"You've grown into exactly the man I hoped you would become."
Jack's voice hardened.
"You let everyone believe you were dead."
"I watched Father destroy himself."
"I watched Uncle Victor tear this family apart."
"And you never came back?"
Isabella's smile faded.
"I couldn't."
"You were never supposed to know I survived."
She slowly removed a leather glove.
Across her wrist was an old scar.
A bullet wound.
"The night everyone believed I died..."
"I was betrayed."
"Not by your father."
"By the people sitting beside him."
Marcus's face went pale.
She pointed directly at him.
"You."
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly lowered his eyes.
Jack stared at the man who had protected him for years.
"What is she talking about?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Instead...
He reached into his coat.
Every weapon immediately pointed toward him.
Evelyn held her breath.
Marcus didn't pull a gun.
He removed an old FBI badge.
The metal was scratched with age.
"My name isn't Marcus Hale."
"My real name..."
"...is Michael Harris."
"I've been undercover for twenty-eight years."
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Jack felt the world tilt beneath him.
"You lied to me."
Michael nodded quietly.
"I lied to everyone."
"The Carson Syndicate wasn't our real target."
"It never was."
He placed several classified files onto the table.
Stamped across every folder were two words.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Evelyn frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Michael looked at her.
"Almost nobody has."
"Because everyone who discovered it disappeared."
He opened the first file.
Photographs covered the pages.
Judges.
Governors.
Federal agents.
Corporate CEOs.
Even military officers.
Each face connected by red lines.
"This isn't a mafia."
"This is an organization hidden inside governments, banks, corporations, and law enforcement."
Jack whispered,
"They used my family..."
"...as a shield."
Michael nodded.
"For three generations."
Suddenly...
Isabella laughed softly.
Not the laugh of a loving mother.
The laugh of someone who had already won.
"You finally figured it out."
She slowly clapped her hands.
The surrounding mercenaries raised assault rifles.
Not toward Jack.
Toward Michael.
"You've chased Project Phoenix your entire career."
"And you were always one step behind."
Michael smiled.
"No."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"I was waiting for her."
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stepped backward.
"Me?"
Michael nodded.
"Your father never hid the Black Ledger."
"He destroyed it."
Silence.
Jack frowned.
"Then what are they looking for?"
Michael smiled sadly.
"The only remaining copy."
He looked directly into Evelyn's eyes.
"You."
She shook her head.
"I don't understand."
Michael took a deep breath.
"When your father realized they would kill him..."
"He photographed every page."
"He encrypted every file."
"And because he trusted nobody..."
"He hid the encryption key inside something nobody would ever suspect."
Evelyn felt cold.
Her breathing became uneven.
Michael continued quietly.
"When you were six years old..."
"Your father gave you a routine childhood vaccination."
Jack frowned.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
Michael answered with seven words that stunned everyone.
"The encryption chip is inside her body."
Complete silence.
Evelyn instinctively touched her shoulder.
"No..."
Michael nodded.
"A tiny medical implant."
"No larger than a grain of rice."
"It contains the only key capable of unlocking every secret your father died protecting."
Suddenly...
Everything made sense.
The assassination.
The years of searching.
The fake deaths.
The betrayals.
The attacks.
They had never been hunting Jack.
They had never been hunting the ledger.
They had been hunting Evelyn.
Her entire life.
Isabella smiled one last time.
"My dear..."
"You were never meant to survive childhood."
She slowly raised one hand.
Every sniper aimed directly at Evelyn.
Jack stepped in front of her without hesitation.
"If you want her..."
"You'll have to kill me first."
Isabella's eyes filled with disappointment.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
She snapped her fingers.
The ground beneath the mansion trembled violently.
A deafening explosion erupted from below.
The entire estate began collapsing into a hidden underground bunker no one had ever known existed.
As the marble floor split open beneath their feet...
Evelyn saw something buried beneath the ruins.
Hundreds of steel vaults.
Each marked with the same symbol.
A burning phoenix.
And inside the largest vault...
Someone was still alive.
Someone had been imprisoned underground...
May you like
For more than thirty years.
