CHAPTER 5 — The Traitor Without a Mask

Every weapon in the room was raised.
Marcus motioned everyone to stay silent.
The ventilation grate creaked.
A shadow appeared.
Jack fired first.
The bullet struck the metal vent, sending sparks flying.
The figure dropped into the room...
Not an assassin.
One of Jack's oldest bodyguards.
Daniel.
The man who had protected him for over fifteen years.
Daniel slowly raised both hands.
"I'm unarmed."
Jack didn't lower his gun.
"You betrayed me."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I protected you your entire life."
"That wasn't betrayal."
"What I'm doing now..."
"...is saving you."
Nobody understood.
Daniel pulled a small memory card from inside his jacket.
"I've spent twelve years pretending to work for your uncle."
"I needed him to trust me."
Jack stared at him.
"You were the mole?"
Daniel nodded.
"But not for him."
He handed Jack the memory card.
"Everything your uncle ever did..."
"Every murder."
"Every bribe."
"Every offshore account."
"I recorded all of it."
Marcus immediately inserted the card into the security computer.
Thousands of files appeared.
Videos.
Bank records.
Wiretap recordings.
Photographs.
Enough evidence to destroy the Carson Syndicate forever.
Jack looked overwhelmed.
"You could've exposed him years ago."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"He was never the real enemy."
The room fell silent.
Daniel enlarged one video recorded six months earlier.
Everyone watched in disbelief.
Jack's uncle knelt before someone whose face remained hidden in darkness.
The powerful mafia leader...
Was taking orders.
A calm female voice echoed through the speakers.
"Keep Jack alive."
"He will lead us directly to the archive."
Jack frowned.
"What archive?"
Daniel looked toward Evelyn.
"The archive your father died protecting."
Marcus whispered,
"The Black Ledger..."
Every organized crime family in America feared those two words.
It wasn't money.
It wasn't gold.
It was information.
Decades of secrets capable of bringing down politicians, judges, billionaires, and criminal empires all at once.
Whoever controlled it...
Controlled everyone.
Suddenly...
The bunker lights failed again.
Every computer screen turned black.
One sentence appeared in glowing white letters.
THANK YOU FOR FINDING IT FOR ME.
Then the memory card burst into flames.
Someone had remotely destroyed every copy.
Except one.
May you like
The original.
Still hidden somewhere.
