CHAPTER 1 After 8 Years, the Gorilla Remembered Him... But Instead of a Hug, He Tried to Drive Him Away

The first thing Henry noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful silence he remembered from years ago, but the heavy, suffocating kind that made every footstep echo through the concrete hallway like a warning.

Eight years.

That was how long it had been since he had last walked these corridors.

Eight years since he had whispered goodnight to the baby gorilla he had rescued from death.

Eight years since retirement stole away the only family he had ever truly known.

Now, at seventy-three years old, Henry tightened his grip on the faded keeper's vest folded neatly over his arm. The fabric smelled of old memories more than anything else.

Inside his jacket pocket rested a tiny photograph.

A baby gorilla wrapped in a blanket...

...sleeping peacefully in his arms.

Henry smiled sadly.

"You probably don't even remember me anymore, Max."

Behind him, two young zoo employees exchanged amused glances.

"So that's the famous Henry?" one whispered.

"The guy everyone says raised the silverback by hand?"

"I heard the gorilla used to follow him around like a child."

"Impossible," another replied. "Animals don't remember people after that many years."

Henry pretended not to hear.

Deep inside...

...he was asking himself the very same question.

The automatic security gate buzzed open.

CLANG.

The sound echoed through Gorilla House B.

Henry slowly stepped inside.

Everything had changed.

The old cages were gone.

The concrete walls had been replaced with reinforced glass and massive steel fencing.

Even the smell was different.

But then...

He saw him.

Max.

The enormous silverback sat in the far corner, nearly motionless.

He looked twice as large as Henry remembered.

Massive shoulders.

Scars across his chest.

Silver hair covering his broad back.

He looked less like an animal...

...and more like a king.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Henry's eyes began to water.

"So..."

he whispered.

"You made it."

Max slowly turned his head.

His dark eyes locked onto the old man.

The entire building seemed to stop breathing.

One keeper quietly whispered,

"I don't think he recognizes him."

Henry took one careful step.

"Max..."

Another step.

"It's me."

Silence.

Then—

The giant gorilla stood up.

Every employee instinctively stepped backward.

The floor trembled beneath his weight.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

Each step echoed like thunder.

Henry smiled through tears.

"There you are..."

But just as he stretched out one trembling hand...

BANG!

Max slammed both fists against the steel barrier with explosive force.

The deafening crash echoed through the entire building.

Several visitors screamed.

One employee stumbled backward.

Another immediately reached for the emergency alarm.

"What the hell—"

BANG!!

Max struck the bars again.

Harder.

His teeth were exposed.

His chest expanded with heavy breaths.

Yet...

Henry noticed something strange.

The gorilla wasn't looking at him with rage.

He was looking...

Past him.

As though something behind Henry terrified him.

The old keeper frowned.

"No..."

he whispered.

"That's not aggression."

Another violent slam.

BANG!

Max suddenly ran to the left side of the enclosure.

Then rushed back.

Then hit the bars again.

Every time Henry tried to move closer...

Max blocked him.

Again.

And again.

And again.

It wasn't an attack.

It was a warning.

"Stay back..."

Henry whispered under his breath.

"You don't want me to come closer."

The younger keepers looked confused.

"Should we sedate him?"

"No."

Henry raised one shaking hand.

"If Max wanted to hurt someone..."

He never finished the sentence.

Because every light inside the gorilla house suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

The emergency generator kicked in.

Darkness swallowed the hallway for less than two seconds.

But during those two seconds...

Everyone heard it.

SCRAAAAAPE...

A metallic dragging sound.

Not from inside Max's enclosure.

From somewhere behind them.

Near the old maintenance corridor...

A corridor that had supposedly been sealed years ago.

When the lights returned...

Max let out the loudest roar anyone in the zoo had ever heard.

It wasn't the roar of an angry gorilla.

It sounded like pure panic.

And then...

The locked service door at the end of the hallway...

Moved.

Just slightly.

As though...

May you like

Something on the other side...

Had pushed it.
