CHAPTER 2 The Sound Behind the Locked Door Changed Everything... What Henry Found Was Worse Than Anyone Could Imagine

No one moved.

Even breathing suddenly felt dangerous.

The metal door stood at the end of the corridor, trembling ever so slightly.

SCRAPE...

Again.

The sound echoed through the building.

One employee swallowed hard.

"I thought that hallway was permanently closed."

"So did I."

Henry's face slowly lost its color.

He knew that corridor.

Very well.

Years ago...

It had connected to the zoo's original quarantine wing.

After the renovation...

It was abandoned forever.

Or so everyone believed.

Max roared again.

Not toward Henry.

Toward the door.

His massive body shook with tension.

He pounded the floor repeatedly.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Henry suddenly understood.

"He's protecting us."

The room fell silent.

The young veterinarian frowned.

"Protecting us... from what?"

Before anyone could answer—

BANG!

The service door shook violently.

This time there was no doubt.

Something had struck it from the inside.

One keeper immediately radioed security.

"Control, this is Gorilla House B. We have movement inside the sealed maintenance corridor."

Static.

No response.

Only interference.

The radios suddenly hissed.

Then went dead.

Every single one.

The building had lost communication.

Henry stared at the door.

Memories flooded back.

He remembered an accident shortly before his retirement.

A classified incident.

An aggressive male gorilla rescued from an illegal wildlife trafficking operation had once been isolated in that quarantine wing.

The animal had suffered severe neurological damage after years of abuse.

It attacked everything that moved.

Eventually...

The official report claimed it had been transferred.

But Henry had never seen it leave.

His heartbeat accelerated.

"No..."

he whispered.

"Please tell me they didn't..."

Another crash interrupted him.

The door bent inward.

The bolts groaned.

One security guard slowly raised his tranquilizer rifle.

"I don't like this."

Neither did Max.

The giant silverback suddenly stood upright.

Then did something no one had ever seen before.

He beat his chest with incredible force.

The booming sound echoed through every hallway.

Not as a challenge.

As a signal.

A warning.

Henry's eyes widened.

"He remembers."

"What?"

"That's the alarm call."

"He used it when he sensed predators in the forest documentaries we showed him as a baby."

Another deafening impact.

CRAAAAACK.

The upper hinge snapped.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Everyone prepared for the worst.

The guard aimed.

Visitors screamed from outside the exhibit.

The door burst open—

And a dark figure exploded into the hallway.

People scattered.

Someone dropped the tranquilizer gun.

Another keeper fell to the ground.

The shadow charged straight toward Henry.

Max roared and hurled his entire body against the barrier.

Steel screamed under the impact.

For one terrifying second...

Everyone believed a monster had escaped.

Then the figure stumbled into the light.

Silence.

It wasn't a gorilla.

It wasn't even an animal.

It was an elderly maintenance worker, soaked in dust, bleeding from a cut above his eye, clutching a broken flashlight.

"I've been trapped..." he gasped.

"...for hours."

The entire hallway froze.

Before anyone could help him...

His trembling finger slowly pointed back into the pitch-black corridor.

His lips quivered.

"There is..."

he whispered.

"...something else still down there."

Behind him...

From the darkness beyond the broken doorway...

Two enormous amber eyes slowly opened.

They did not blink.

They simply stared.

And Max...

The fearless silverback who had never backed down from any threat...

Quietly stepped backward.

For the first time in his life...

The king of Gorilla House looked afraid.
