CHAPTER 7 The Secret File Buried Beneath the Zoo Was Never Meant to Be Opened... What Henry Read Changed Everything

No one slept that night.

The zoo was placed under emergency lockdown.

Visitors were escorted out.

Every employee was ordered to remain silent until the authorities completed their investigation.

Officially, the incident would be described as a "temporary power failure."

Unofficially...

Everyone who had stood in Gorilla House B knew they had witnessed something impossible.

Henry refused to leave.

He sat on an old wooden bench outside Max's enclosure, staring through the reinforced glass.

The silverback hadn't moved for nearly an hour.

He simply watched Henry.

As if waiting.

As if he knew the night was far from over.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the corridor.

An elderly woman wearing a faded security badge approached slowly.

Her white hair was tied into a neat bun, and although Henry hadn't seen her in decades, he recognized her immediately.

"Margaret..."

She gave him a tired smile.

"I hoped I'd never have to come back here."

Margaret had once been the zoo's chief veterinarian.

She had retired just months before Henry.

If anyone knew the zoo's darkest secrets...

It was her.

Without saying another word, she handed Henry a small brass key.

"I kept this all these years."

Henry stared at it.

It was marked with a single engraved letter.

B.

"What does it open?"

Margaret looked toward the abandoned quarantine corridor.

"The basement archive."

Henry frowned.

"I thought that place was demolished."

"So did everyone else."

She hesitated before adding,

"Because that's what they wanted us to believe."

Thirty minutes later...

Henry, Margaret, the young veterinarian Daniel, and two security officers descended a narrow concrete staircase hidden beneath an old storage room.

The air smelled damp.

Rust covered every pipe.

Spider webs stretched across forgotten electrical panels.

At the end of the corridor stood a heavy steel door.

Henry inserted the brass key.

CLICK.

The lock opened immediately.

Inside...

Hundreds of dusty filing cabinets lined the room.

Most were empty.

One cabinet remained locked with a red warning seal.

Across the front, faded black letters could still be read.

PROJECT ECHO

Daniel looked confused.

"I've never heard of this."

Margaret's expression darkened.

"You were never supposed to."

Henry broke the brittle seal.

Inside lay dozens of yellowed folders.

Most had been marked:

DESTROY AFTER REVIEW

Only one file carried a handwritten note.

SUBJECT: MAX

Henry's hands trembled.

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of baby Max.

Of another gorilla.

Larger.

Older.

Its eyes glowed unnaturally bright under laboratory lights.

Beneath the photo, someone had typed:

Specimen 12 demonstrated an unprecedented ability to imitate human voices and emotional responses. Termination recommended. Infant subject rescued before transfer. Codename assigned: MAX.

Henry's breathing stopped.

"No..."

"This can't be..."

Margaret lowered her head.

"You didn't rescue a random orphan."

"You rescued the last survivor."

"The others..."

"They never left this building."

Before Henry could ask another question—

A loud metallic crash echoed upstairs.

Then came Max's roar.

Not one roar.

Three.

Fast.

Urgent.

It was the same warning call he had used years ago whenever danger approached.

Henry looked toward the ceiling.

"They're coming."

Margaret whispered one horrifying sentence.

May you like

"No..."

"They've finally found the archive."
