CHAPTER 8 Max Broke Out of His Enclosure... But He Wasn't Escaping—He Was Trying to Save Henry

The entire basement shook.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Another violent impact echoed through the zoo.
BOOM!
Daniel grabbed his flashlight.
"That came from Gorilla House B!"
Henry's heart sank.
"Max..."
They sprinted up the staircase.
By the time they reached the corridor, alarms were blaring throughout the entire facility.
Red emergency lights flashed relentlessly.
Security officers rushed in every direction.
Then everyone stopped.
The reinforced glass surrounding Max's enclosure had shattered.
Thousands of glittering fragments covered the floor.
The massive steel gate had been twisted completely off its hinges.
But the strangest part...
Max wasn't there.
Panic erupted.
"The silverback escaped!"
"Seal every exit!"
"Protect the visitors!"
Armed response teams stormed toward the exhibits with tranquilizer rifles.
Henry shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Don't shoot him!"
No one listened.
Then, from the end of the hallway, came a deep, unmistakable roar.
Henry turned.
Max stood beneath the flickering lights.
Free.
Powerful.
Yet he wasn't charging anyone.
He wasn't attacking.
Instead, he looked directly at Henry...
...and struck the floor once with his enormous fist.
BOOM.
Then he turned and disappeared into the darkness.
"He wants us to follow him," Henry said.
"Are you insane?" a guard shouted.
Before anyone could argue, every emergency light in the hallway went out.
Darkness swallowed the building again.
This time, it lasted longer.
Ten seconds.
Fifteen.
Twenty.
When the backup generators finally restored power...
Three armed guards had vanished.
Their tranquilizer rifles lay abandoned on the floor.
No blood.
No signs of struggle.
Only silence.
Then Daniel noticed something on the wall.
Written in fresh dust were four words.
HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED GONE.
Henry felt a chill run through his entire body.
"That's for me."
At that exact moment, Max reappeared.
He wasn't alone.
Behind him walked a tiny gorilla no one at the zoo knew existed.
The infant clung tightly to Max's back, peeking over his shoulder with frightened eyes.
Everyone froze.
"There are no baby gorillas here," Daniel whispered.
"There haven't been any for years."
Max gently placed the infant on the ground.
Then he stepped in front of it protectively.
Henry slowly approached.
The little gorilla stared at him...
...and reached into the straw beneath its feet.
It pulled out a rusted metal identification tag.
Henry took it with shaking hands.
Stamped into the metal were two chilling words:
SPECIMEN 13
Margaret gasped.
"I thought... there were no survivors."
Before anyone could process what they were seeing, a distorted voice echoed through the loudspeakers across the entire zoo.
It wasn't human.
It wasn't mechanical.
It sounded like dozens of voices speaking at once.
"Welcome back... Henry."
"We've been waiting..."
"...for you to finish what you started."
The lights exploded into darkness once again.

And somewhere beyond the exhibits...
Heavy footsteps began moving toward them.
