Chapter 1 - THE GRAVE UNDER THE GLASSAlexander Morgan did not reach the top of the financial world by letting emotion cloud his judgment. He got there by calculating risks, reading people, and striking when the iron was hot. But as he stood in his private elevator, descending back toward his terrace, the raw image of Tommy Martinez—a bruised seven-year-old clutching a cracked bucket of imported soil—refused to leave his mind.

When the glass doors slid open, Alexander expected to find the boy sitting where he had left him. Instead, the terrace was empty.

The bucket lay overturned on the marble floor, its rich, dark dirt spilled across the pristine white surface. Beside it was a single, worn leather shoe.

"Tommy?" Alexander called out, his voice echoing off the glass perimeter.

No answer. Only the low hum of the wind sweeping past the skyscraper.

Alexander’s pulse spiked. He marched over to the security post near the terrace entrance. Marcus, the veteran guard on duty, was slumped in his chair, his head bowed. Alexander lunged forward, grabbing the man by his shoulder. Marcus didn't move. A faint, sickening sweet odor hung in the air—chloroform.

"Security! Code Red, terrace level!" Alexander shouted into his encrypted earpiece, his voice booming with authority. "Shut down the elevators! Lock down the perimeter!"

Within ninety seconds, his personal tactical team swarmed the floor. Standing beside them was Maria, holding a tablet displaying the penthouse security feeds. Her face was pale.

"Mr. Morgan," Maria said, her voice trembling slightly. "The feeds were looped three minutes ago. Someone bypassed our military-grade firewall from the inside."

"That’s impossible," Alexander snapped. "No one has access to those servers except me, you, and—"

"And your brother," Maria finished quietly.

Alexander felt a cold surge of betrayal wash over him. Julian.

Julian Morgan had spent the last five years in voluntary exile after losing a bitter proxy war for control of Morgan Holdings. He was a shadow, a memory, a disgraced ghost who lived off his trust fund in Western Europe. Or so Alexander had believed.

"Show me," Alexander demanded.

Maria tapped her screen, pulling up the scrubbed access logs. A secondary protocol had been activated using an master encryption key that had been dead for six years. Attached to the override was a short, automated video file sent directly to Alexander’s secure server.

Alexander hit play.

The video showed a dimly lit room with exposed brick walls. Tommy sat in a metal chair, his hands bound loosely with zip-ties, looking terrified but resolute. Behind him stood a man whose face remained shrouded in shadow, holding a heavy silver signet ring—the exact replica of the Morgan family crest.

"Hello, brother," a smooth, distorted voice rasped through the speaker. "You spent decades building an empire on the illusion that you could protect everything you owned. But you couldn't even protect a child in your own backyard."

"What do you want, Julian?" Alexander growled at the screen, though he knew it was a pre-recorded loop.

"I don't want your money, Alex. You took my birthright, so I am going to take your sanity. The boy thinks his mother and sister are dead. Ask yourself... why would a child steal soil to bury people whose bodies were never released by the city morgue?"

The screen went black.

Alexander stared at the blank display, his mind racing through a maze of impossible variables. What did Julian mean? Tommy had said his mother and sister died of illness in the slum known as the Shadows. But Julian was implying something far more sinister.

"Maria," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register of icy precision. "Get my car. We aren't calling the police."

"Sir, if Julian is involved—"

"Julian didn't kidnap this boy for ransom," Alexander interrupted, stepping over the spilled soil. "He did it because Tommy Martinez is holding a secret that could burn my entire empire to the ground."
