Chapter 11 - THE SECOND HARVEST

The serenity of the Shadows Urban Reserve was shattered on a damp Tuesday morning when the soil itself began to bleed.

Alexander Morgan was crouched near the western boundary of the reserve, inspecting a row of newly planted apple saplings, when his hands dipped into the damp earth and came up stained a dark, rust-red color. It wasn't mud. The liquid carried a pungent, chemical smell that burned his nostrils—a mixture of sulfur and oxidized iron.

Beside him, Tommy Martinez dropped his trowel, his face turning pale. "Mr. Morgan... what is that?"

Alexander wiped his fingers on a rag, his jaw tightening. "Tommy, get your grandmother and Clara inside the health center immediately. Don't touch the ground."

Before Tommy could turn, a black luxury sedan with tinted windows pulled up to the curb along the park perimeter. The door opened, and a woman stepped out, her stiletto heels sinking deliberately into the fresh grass. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, her sleek silver hair cut into an asymmetrical bob. In her hand, she held a thick leather folder.

Alexander stood up, shielding Tommy behind him. "Who are you?"

"Victoria Vance," she said, her voice smooth, precise, and devoid of warmth. "Managing Partner at Vance & Sterling Global Investment. And more importantly, the new receiver of the Morgan Estate's primary debt portfolio."

Julian emerged from the nearby greenhouse, leaning heavily on his walking stick as he limped toward them. "The Morgan Estate has no remaining debt. All assets were liquidated under federal supervision five years ago."

Victoria smiled, pulling a heavy document from her folder. "Your father, Arthur Morgan, was a remarkably cautious man, Julian. He knew Alexander’s legal team would attempt to dismantle the conglomerate if the toxic secret ever leaked. So forty years ago, he took out an off-balance-sheet loan against the land titles beneath this entire district."

She tossed the folder onto a wooden park bench.

"The creditor was a Swiss trust held by my firm," Victoria continued. "The terms were simple: if Morgan Holdings failed to deliver fifty liters of hyper-adaptive antibody serum every decade, the land titles automatically revert to Vance & Sterling. The deadline passed three days ago."

Alexander stepped forward, his fists clenched at his sides. "This land was designated a protected municipal trust by a federal judge."

"A federal judge who was working with incomplete property deeds," Victoria countered coldly. "We filed for quiet title in international arbitration yesterday. As of 6:00 AM, my company owns every square foot of soil beneath your feet. And as you can see..." She pointed her manicured finger toward the red liquid bubbling up through the grass. "...the automated containment seals your father built eighty feet below ground are failing. Without the clinic's extraction systems running, the entire subterranean vault is about to rupture."

Alexander felt the ground beneath him vibrate—a low, terrifying tremor that had nothing to do with earthquakes.

May you like

"You knew this would happen," Julian gasped, clutching his chest.

"Of course I knew," Victoria said, turning back toward her sedan. "You have seventy-two hours to evacuate this reserve, Mr. Morgan. Or you can restart the extraction clinic and deliver our serum. If you refuse... the toxic surge will break through the topsoil and contaminate the entire city's water supply by Friday."
