Chapter 8 - COLLAPSEAlexander stared at his brother’s arm, the cold reality of Julian’s desperation crashing down upon him. The vendetta, the kidnapping, the cruelty—it wasn't just ambition or corporate greed. It was the frantic, cornered thrashing of a man watching his own body decay from his father’s legacy.

"Julian..." Alexander said, taking another step closer. "Our medical teams have the research now. We can reverse it. We have the data from the clinic."
"The serum requires a lethal extraction, Alex!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "To save one life, you have to drain another! That’s the grand design father left us! A cure that demands human sacrifice! Are you willing to kill that boy to save me? Are you willing to kill him to save yourself?"
"No," Alexander said firmly. "We find another way. We spend every dollar the Morgan family owns until we synthesize a synthetic alternative."
Julian shook his head, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on his cheeks. "There is no synthetic alternative. I tried. For five years in Europe, I hired the best geneticists in the world. The human body only produces the neutralizing antibody under extreme, generational toxic stress. It can't be replicated in a lab."
Julian raised his revolver again—not aiming at Alexander, but pointing it directly at a massive structural valve attached to the vault wall behind him. The valve controlled the pressure for the main chemical containment reservoir that sat directly beneath the old plant.
"Julian, don't!" Alexander lunged forward.
CRACK! CRACK!
Julian fired two shots straight into the rusted iron valve casing.
A deafening screech of tearing metal tore through the chamber. Pressurized steam and dark, oily liquid erupted from the breached valve with hydraulic force. The structural beams lining the ceiling groaned under sudden, tremendous pressure, deep cracks spiderwebbing through the ancient concrete overhead.
"If the world won't let me live," Julian screamed over the roar of escaping gas, "then I’m burying the Morgan legacy right here under the dirt!"
The ceiling began to cave in. Massive chunks of concrete rained down into the rising water.
Alexander threw himself forward, tackling Julian to the ground just as a two-ton section of the roof collapsed directly where Julian had been standing. The impact threw both men into the churning, icy water of the drainage channel.
Debris blocked the tunnel back to the laboratory. Dust and blinding steam filled the air, rendering their flashlights useless.
Alexander dragged himself out of the water, coughing violently as toxic fumes burned his lungs. He reached through the rubble, his fingers catching the fabric of Julian’s coat.
"I’ve got you!" Alexander roared, pulling his brother out from under a pile of fallen masonry.
Julian lay on his back, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. His revolver had been lost in the floodwaters.

"Why... why didn't you let me die?" Julian whispered, looking up at the collapsing ceiling.
"Because you're my brother," Alexander said, slinging Julian’s heavy arm over his shoulder. "And we are walking out of this tunnel together."
