Chapter 15 - THE BLACK FLOWWhen Alexander’s private jet touched down at the city's cargo airfield six hours later, the sky above Metropolis was the color of bruised iron. A torrential downpour had turned the streets into slick black rivers, and the water levels in the industrial canal were rising rapidly.

Alexander, Maria, and Julian rushed straight to the reserve’s medical center.
The scene inside was pure chaos. Dozens of local residents were working with handheld pumps, trying to keep a thick, black, oily sludge from overflowing the garden’s drainage retention ponds. The soil near the central monument had subsided three feet, creating a widening fissure where the toxic runoff was bubbling up like a geyser.
Elena met them at the door, her boots covered in mud. "It’s getting worse, Alexander! The city water authority just issued a boil-water advisory for the entire lower district!"
"Where is Tommy?" Alexander asked immediately.
"He’s down in the lower drainage pump room with Clara," Elena said, pointing toward the basement access hatch. "He refused to leave. He said if the garden dies, everything we built dies."
Alexander sprinted down the concrete stairs into the flooded basement. Three feet of foul, dark water swirled around the electric pump housings.
In the center of the room, Tommy and Clara were hauling heavy bags of sand to build a dike around the electrical junction box.
"Tommy!" Alexander shouted, splashing through the water and grabbing the heavy sandbag from the boy's hands. "Get out of here! The electrical panels are about to short out!"
"No!" Tommy yelled back, his small face smeared with grease and black mud. "If these pumps stop, the water goes straight into the main pipe under the school! You told me we don't run away when the winter comes!"
Alexander looked at the young boy, feeling a profound surge of pride mixed with sheer terror for his safety. He grabbed Tommy by the shoulders. "Listen to me, Tommy. I have the schematics now. I know how to shut off the main valve. But I need you to lead your mother and grandmother upstairs and secure the emergency communications radio. Can you do that for me?"
Tommy looked into Alexander’s eyes, saw the absolute determination there, and nodded sharply. "Okay. Don't die down here, Mr. Morgan."
"I won't," Alexander promised.
As Clara guided Tommy up the stairs, Julian descended into the basement, carrying a heavy underwater cutting torch and two scuba oxygen tanks.
"The kill-switch is located inside the primary pressure chamber eighty feet down," Julian said, checking the pressure gauges on the oxygen tanks. "The entrance is submerged under the old intake manifold."
"You can't go down there, Julian," Alexander said. "Your lungs can't handle the pressure."
"I’m not going down," Julian replied, handing the torch to Alexander. "I’m going to stay at the control panel up here and guide you through the radio. But Alex... the kill-switch isn't an electronic button. It’s a manual mechanical sluice gate."
Alexander strapped the oxygen tank to his back and secured the diving mask over his face. "Which means once I turn it... someone has to hold the gate closed until the pressure equalizes."
Julian looked away, unable to meet his brother's eyes. "If you don't hold it, the hydraulic backpressure will blow the gate open again in seconds."
May you like
"Then I’ll hold it," Alexander said quietly, clicking his underwater flashlight on.
Without another word, Alexander plunged into the dark, toxic water of the flooded manifold.
