Chapter 10 - A Father’s Promise KeptRachel and I sprinted beneath the burning beam, carrying Clara safety toward the emergency fire escape stairs.

Once we crossed, Arthur threw the blazing beam aside with a thunderous roar, turning and rolling through the flames just as the entire ceiling of the NICU collapsed behind him in a shower of sparks and rubble.

Seconds later, we burst through the ground-floor exit doors into the cool, raining night air.

Paramedics rushed forward, wrapping us in emergency blankets and taking Clara’s incubator into a fully equipped critical-care ambulance.

Arthur stumbled out behind us, collapsing onto his knees in the wet grass. His hands were severely burned, his face covered in soot, but his eyes were bright, clear, and fixed on the ambulance.

Maya ran forward, tears falling freely, and fell to her knees beside Arthur, weeping as she held his trembling, blistered hands.

"You saved us, Arthur," Maya sobbed. "You kept your promise to Marcus."

Suddenly, three FBI vehicles slammed to a halt at the edge of the scene. Federal agents poured out, surrounded by armed officers, marching directly toward a sleek black limousine parked down the street.

General Vance Harrison was dragged out of the back seat in handcuffs, along with his high-ranking co-conspirators.

Rachel stepped forward, holding out a digital memory drive to the lead FBI agent.

"This drive contains the extracted bio-data from Clara's medical marker, along with full audio recordings of General Harrison ordering the hit on St. Jude," Rachel said firmly. "It's over."

Harrison looked back at Arthur, his face filled with rage and disbelief as he was shoved into the back of a federal vehicle, his political career and military legacy ruined forever.

Inside the warmth of the intensive care ambulance, the medical team carefully opened the incubator.

Maya stepped inside, tears falling onto her cheeks as she held her daughter for the very first time. She looked up at Arthur, who was standing in the doorway, his massive frame framed by the rain.

"Arthur... come here," Maya whispered softly.

Arthur hesitated, looking down at his heavily bandaged, shaking hands. "I... I don't want to hurt her."

"You could never hurt her," Maya said softly. "You're the man who saved her life."

Arthur stepped into the ambulance and carefully sat beside Maya. With gentle precision, Maya placed tiny Clara directly into Arthur’s lap.

The moment the baby felt Arthur’s touch, she opened her dark blue eyes, looking straight up into the eyes of the battle-scarred veteran who had fought through hell to protect her.

Clara reached out her impossibly tiny hand, wrapping her small fingers around Arthur’s thumb.

And in that instant, something miraculous happened.

The permanent tremor in Arthur Vance’s hands—the uncontrollable shake that had haunted him for ten long years—completely stopped.

His hands were perfectly, utterly still.

I stood beside the ambulance door, watching the giant warrior weep silent tears of pure joy as he gently rocked the baby to sleep. The war was finally over. Arthur Vance had finally come home.

THE END
