Chapter 2 - The Ambush at Bed SevenThe sudden commotion triggered a chain reaction across the room. Monitors beeped wildly as startled infants began to cry, but Arthur didn't flinch. He instinctually turned his body, shielding Clara with his massive shoulders, placing himself between the police officers and the baby.

"Stand down, officers!" I yelled, stepping firmly between the police and Arthur. "This is an intensive care unit! You are endangering critically ill infants!"

"Out of the way, Charge Nurse," the social worker snapped, her badge reading Rachel Vance.

My eyes widened. Vance?

"You're his sister?" I asked, piecing together the family connection in real-time.

"I am the Senior CPS Regional Director," Rachel said coldly, adjusting her glasses. "And Arthur Vance is a medically retired veteran with severe, untreated PTSD and a history of explosive violence. He took this baby's mother, Maya Sterling, from a rehabilitation facility three days ago without authorization. Maya is currently missing, and Arthur is the prime suspect!"

The room dropped into an icy silence. I turned to look at Arthur. His face remained unreadable, but the tremor in his hands intensified.

"She's lying," Arthur said quietly, his voice deadly calm. "Maya didn't run away. She was taken. And if I hadn't intervened, Clara would have been sold before she even drew her first breath."

"Nonsense!" Rachel barked, motioning for the officers to move in. "Officer, secure the child and hand her over to the emergency foster supervisor waiting outside."

As one of the officers reached for Clara, something extraordinary happened. The moment the officer's hand approached the baby, Clara’s heart rate monitor spiked violently. Her oxygen levels dropped into the critical red zone—70... 65... 60. She began to turn blue, gasping frantically for air.

"Back off!" I screamed, pushing the officer's arm away. "She's going into respiratory failure! The stress is killing her!"

Arthur immediately pressed Clara back against his chest, swaying gently and humming a low, wordless melody—the same cadence military units use to keep rhythm on long marches. Within three seconds, Clara's oxygen saturation stopped plunging. It hovered, stabilized, and slowly climbed back to 95%.

"Look at the monitors!" I demanded, turning on Rachel. "This baby's nervous system is severely damaged from prenatal exposure. Arthur is the only stabilizing factor she has right now. If you force her out of his arms, her lungs will collapse!"

Rachel looked at the glowing red numbers on the monitor, then at her brother. A flicker of doubt crossed her cold expression, quickly replaced by calculating resolve.

"Fine," Rachel said softly. "He can hold her for now. But Arthur is going nowhere. Officers, lock down this room."

She leaned in closer to Arthur, whispering so only he and I could hear. "You think you're saving Marcus's baby, Arthur? You have no idea what web you just walked into. Marcus didn't die from an enemy IED. He was murdered by his own unit—and the people who paid for that hit are coming for that baby."
