Chapter 7 - The ConfrontationA blinding explosion of orange fire erupted overhead, blowing out the lights and throwing the tunnel into chaotic, roaring inferno!

The blast wave threw Harrison’s mercenaries to the ground. Sprinkler systems activated instantly, drenching the tunnel in cold water and filling the corridor with dense steam.

Arthur moved like a ghost through the smoke. Using the tactical training ingrained in his bones, he neutralized the first two mercenaries in seconds, using their own momentum to slam them against the damp concrete walls before they could fire a single shot.

Harrison scrambled backward through the smoke, coughing and reaching for his sidearm. But as he turned, Arthur’s massive hand clamped around Harrison’s throat, lifting the powerful general six inches off the ground and slamming him against the brick wall.

"Where is Maya Sterling?" Arthur demanded, his voice sounding like thunder over the roar of the fire sprinklers.

Harrison choked, clutching at Arthur’s steel-like grip. "She's... she's in the abandoned clinic on 4th Street... but you'll never reach her in time!"

Clara, completely protected beneath Arthur’s heavy waterproof jacket, let out a tiny, soft squeak. Arthur looked down, his expression softening instantly. He relaxed his grip just enough to drop Harrison to his knees.

"Sarah! Rachel! Move now!" Arthur shouted.

Rachel, sobbing in relief and remorse, ran forward. "Arthur, I'm sorry! I swear I only did it to keep Maya alive!"

"Prove it," Arthur said coldly, handing her his military dog tags. "Take Sarah and Clara through the ventilation access hatch at the end of this tunnel. It leads directly to the street behind the emergency room. Get Clara to an ambulance and lock the doors."

"What about you?" I asked, gripping Arthur's arm. "You can't go to that clinic alone!"

"I promised Marcus I would bring his family home," Arthur said, his trembling hand gently stroking Clara's soft, tiny head one last time. "All of them. Keep her safe, Sarah."

Without waiting for an answer, Arthur turned and vanished into the thick steam, running toward the surface to launch a one-man rescue mission.

I locked eyes with Rachel. "Can I trust you?"

"I loved Marcus like a brother," Rachel said, wiping her face with determination. "I will die before I let anyone hurt his daughter again."

We crawled through the narrow metal ventilation hatch, holding Clara close, as the sound of sirens began to wail across the city above us.
