Chapter 4 - Lockdown at St. Jude"Get down!" Arthur roared.

He instantly threw his massive body over Clara’s incubator, covering her completely with his broad back as the glass shattered inward in a hail of silenced gunfire.

The two police officers grabbed their sidearms, but before they could return fire, the glass doors were kicked open. Flashbang grenades bounced across the linoleum floor, exploding in a blinding white flash and a deafening roar.

Pandemonium erupted in the NICU. Alarms shrieked, smoke filled the room, and nurses scrambled to cover the incubators of the other fragile infants.

Through the smoke, the tactical operatives moved with cold precision. Their goal wasn't to kill everyone—it was to isolate Bed Seven and secure the child.

"Arthur, take her!" I screamed, pulling the portable transport ventilator off the wall and hooking it to Clara's makeshift travel incubator. "There's a service elevator behind the linen supply closet! It leads directly to the subterranean maintenance tunnels!"

Arthur didn't hesitate. Despite his permanent nerve damage and trembling hands, his muscle memory from a decade of combat took over seamlessly. He scooped Clara into a specialized chest-sling, securing her flush against his body beneath his heavy gown, protecting her fragile spine with his own arm.

One of the masked attackers lunged through the smoke, reaching for Clara. Arthur didn't miss a beat. With a lightning-fast move, he grabbed the attacker's wrist, twisted it with bone-snapping force, and slammed the man headfirst into a heavy steel monitor cart, knocking him unconscious instantly.

"Sarah, move!" Arthur shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the back supply room while shielding his sister Rachel behind him.

We sprinted through the dark, smoke-filled corridor as gunfire chipped the plaster off the walls above our heads. Arthur slammed through the heavy steel door of the linen closet, pushing us into the hidden service bay behind it.

He slammed the emergency manual override lever, sliding the heavy blast doors shut and locking the attackers out.

For a moment, all we could hear was the heavy, ragged breathing of our small group and the rhythmic, soft hum of Clara’s portable oxygen pump.

Arthur looked down at his chest. Clara was wide awake, her dark eyes looking straight up into his face. She wasn't crying. Against his warm, beating heart, she remained perfectly calm.

"She trusts you," I breathed, wiping blood and dust from my face.

"She knows her father's spirit is keeping her safe," Arthur said quietly. He looked at Rachel. "Who ordered this hit, sister? Name him."

Rachel shook violently, her composure completely shattered. "It's General Harrison. He's running for the United States Senate... and he's currently sitting upstairs in the St. Jude Boardroom, attending a charity gala as the guest of honor."
