Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's VerdictThe silence in the owner’s suite became suffocating.

Claire froze. The woman on the screen—Victoria Harrison, Daniel’s mother and the formidable Chairperson of Harrison Maritime Holdings—looked at Claire with an expression that was half-disgust, half-calculated assessment.

Daniel’s posture stiffened instantly. The relaxed, affectionate husband vanished, replaced by the ruthless corporate heir. He stepped in front of Claire, shielding her from the screen, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register.

"Watch your tone, Mother," Daniel said, his tone chillingly flat. "You are speaking to my wife."

Victoria Harrison didn't flinch. She leaned forward, resting her hands on the mahogany table in New York.

"Save the dramatics for the theater, Daniel," Victoria snapped, her voice carrying clearly through the suite's surround-sound speakers. "Do you have any idea what has happened in the last forty minutes since your little incident on the VIP deck?"

Daniel didn't blink. "Enlighten me."

"Ethan Walsh didn't just crawl out from under a rock; he is a retained corporate front-man for the Meridian Group," Victoria said sharply, gesturing to one of the attorneys beside her who handed her a glowing tablet. "Two years ago, before his federal sentence, Walsh signed a clandestine non-disclosure and asset-pooling agreement with our primary global competitor, Sterling Maritime. They have been quietly buying up distressed debt tied to our secondary shipping lanes, using proxy fronts like Walsh's shell companies."

Claire’s breath caught. She stepped out from behind Daniel, her eyes wide. "That's impossible... Ethan was a small-time consultant. He lost everything when his partners allegedly stole from him—"

"His partners didn't steal from him, my dear," Victoria interrupted, her eyes narrowing as she looked directly at Claire through the monitor. "He was a paid corporate spy. Sterling Maritime planted him to infiltrate our supply chains. When he married you seven years ago, it wasn't a coincidence. They were using your background in community event coordination to gain backdoor access to municipal port permits in Charleston."

The room spun.

Claire felt the blood drain entirely from her face. She grabbed the edge of the velvet sofa to steady herself. Seven years ago. It wasn't just a marriage built on lies, control, and emotional abuse. It was a corporate espionage operation. She had been nothing more than a useful asset, a pawn in a chess game played by billionaires.

"Claire," Daniel said urgently, turning back to her and placing his hands on her shoulders. "Don't listen to her. That was before—"

"No, Daniel, look at the screen," Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through his protest. "The security footage of Walsh throwing champagne on your wife has already been weaponized. Sterling Maritime's PR firm leaked an edited version to financial news networks five minutes ago. They are claiming that the billionaire owner of Harrison Maritime Holdings is harboring an unstable, compromised asset—your wife—who has deep ties to federal felons and corporate espionage rings."

Daniel’s face went completely white with a terrifying, incandescent rage.

"They shorted our stock," Daniel whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "They provoked me on my own ship, orchestrated the public confrontation, and recorded it to trigger an emergency sell-off."

"Correct," Victoria said, her voice dropping to a grim whisper. "Trading opens in Tokyo in four hours. If we don't counter-narrate immediately, Harrison Maritime will lose three billion dollars in market capitalization before the sun rises. The Board has already drafted a resolution..."

Victoria paused, looking directly at Claire with cold, unyielding calculation.

"...recommending that Daniel immediately issue a formal public statement distancing himself from Claire, filing for an emergency annulment on the grounds of fraudulent association."

The suite fell dead silent.

Claire looked at Daniel. She saw the storm raging behind his gray-blue eyes—the agonizing war between his duty to his family empire and his fierce, unshakable love for her.

Slowly, deliberately, Claire stepped out of his grip. She wiped the dried champagne from her cheek, straightened her spine, and looked straight into the camera lens in New York, right at the formidable matriarch of the Harrison empire.

"Draft the resolution, Mrs. Harrison," Claire said, her voice shaking slightly, but clear and resolute. "You won't need to ask him twice."
