Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike"Are you out of your absolute mind?"

Daniel’s voice roared through the suite, shaking the delicate crystal decanters on the sideboard. He grabbed Claire by the shoulders, turning her to face him, his eyes burning with a mixture of disbelief and fury. "Did you not just hear what she said? They want to scapegoat you! And you just hand them the knife?"

"I didn't hand them anything, Daniel," Claire said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. She looked up at him, her eyes fierce. "Do you think I’m going to let some corporate vultures use me as a weapon to destroy everything you’ve built? Ethan spent seven years making me feel like a parasite. I am not going to be the reason Harrison Maritime bleeds billions."

Before Daniel could answer, the communications panel chimed again.

Victoria’s voice cut through the room before either of them could touch the console. "She has more spine than you give her credit for, Daniel. But courage doesn't stop market panics. Sterling Maritime's CEO, Julian Sterling, is currently leading the short-sell syndicate. He thinks he's checkmated us."

Daniel spun around, jabbing the intercom button. "Julian is a glorified accountant playing pirate. If he wants a war, I’ll burn his entire fleet to the water line."

"You can't burn anything if our liquidity freezes in Tokyo," Victoria countered sharply. "Unless..."

"Unless what, Mother?" Daniel snapped.

"Unless we turn their trap against them," Victoria said, a cold, dangerous edge creeping into her voice. "Ethan Walsh didn't just act as a corporate spy; he embezzled over four million dollars from municipal accounts in South Carolina using forged signatures under his alias. If we release the unredacted federal indictment documents—proving that Sterling Maritime knowingly funded a convicted felon to infiltrate our ports—we don't just defend ourselves. We trigger a federal RICO investigation into Sterling Maritime."

Daniel stared at the screen, the wheels in his brilliant, strategic mind turning at lightning speed. "Julian’s holding company will collapse before midday."

"Exactly," Victoria replied. "But we need a verified public witness to authenticate the documents. Someone who was inside Walsh's inner circle. Someone who can stand before the international press corps tomorrow morning and deliver the fatal blow."

The boardroom in New York went quiet.

On the screen, all five board members turned their collective gaze away from the camera and looked directly at Claire.

Claire stood frozen. The realization of what they were asking hit her like a cold wave. They didn't want to discard her. They wanted to put her on the global stage, facing down international media, Wall Street analysts, and the ruthless executives of Sterling Maritime, and let her destroy her ex-husband and his corporate masters with her own hands.

She looked at Daniel. He was shaking his head, his jaw clenched tight. "No. Absolutely not. I won't put her through that."

"Daniel," Claire whispered softly.

She reached out, placing her hand over his clenched fist. The skin was hot, tense with adrenaline. She looked into his eyes and saw all the fear, the protectiveness, and the desperate love he held for her.

"For seven years, Ethan made me a ghost," Claire said, her voice dropping into a fierce, steady cadence. "He hid behind my charity work. He made me feel small, invisible, and powerless. If I walk away now, I let him win. I let him define who I am."

She turned back to the screen, squaring her shoulders. Her ruined ivory dress was stained with champagne, her hair was stiff, but as she looked at Victoria Harrison, there was no trace of intimidation left in her eyes.

"Tell the press corps to have cameras ready," Claire said clearly. "I have a story to tell them."
