Chapter 2 - The Tables Turn

"Code Blue! Code Blue in Delivery Room 3!"
The chaos that erupted in the room was instant and blinding. Nurses dropped their charts; the neonatal specialist sprinted out with our crying baby in an incubator, while two other residents rushed to drag Bradley’s limp body away from my field of vision.
I lay there, shivering violently as hypothermia from blood loss set in. My body felt hollow, freezing, and detached. Yet, my mind was hyper-focused, burning with the cold clarity of pure survival.
"Get her to OR 1 immediately!" a senior trauma surgeon, Dr. Thomas, yelled as he burst through the doors, having been called by the frantic scrub nurse. He took one look at my vitals and then at Bradley, who was now groaning on the floor as nurses checked his pulse. "What the hell happened here?!"
"He... he refused the C-section..." I whispered, my voice a dry rattle.
Dr. Thomas’s eyes widened in sheer horror. As the Chief of Emergency Medicine, I outranked Bradley in administrative clout, and Thomas knew my clinical judgment. He saw the massive pool of blood, the broken bed rail still clutched in my frozen fingers, and the bruised crescent marks on my arm where Hannah had dug her nails.
"Prep for emergency hysterectomy and vessel ligation, now!" Thomas ordered, his voice booming with authority. He leaned over my face, his eyes fierce. "Allison, stay with me. You're going to live. Do you hear me?"

"My... my license..." I choked out, a dark, dangerous plan forming behind my eyes. "Bradley... check his drug drawer... he's been taking..."
My vision tunnel-visioned into blackness as the general anesthesia mask was slammed over my face. The last thing I heard was the chaotic symphony of monitors and Thomas shouting for security.
