Two years later.
The sun was shining brilliantly over the private gardens of my new estate overlooking the ocean. The salty breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming white hydrangeas and the cheerful, bubbling laughter of a toddler chasing a golden retriever across the emerald lawn.
"Mama! Look! Catch!"
A small, sturdy two-year-old boy came hurtling toward me, holding a bright red rubber ball in his hands. His run was completely balanced, strong, and uninhibited, his right arm swinging with total freedom and health.
I scooped Leo up into the air, spinning him around as he shrieked with pure, unadulterated joy, burying his little face in my neck.
"I got you! I caught it!" Leo squealed, hugging my neck tightly.
"You sure did, my brilliant boy," I laughed, pressing a long, warm kiss to his forehead.
From the patio, Victoria walked out carrying a tray of iced lemonade, smiling warmly as she watched us. Life had taken us all on an incredible, harrowing journey, but we had carved out a fortress of strength, power, and absolute independence.
