CHAPTER 1 – THE MAN EVERYONE WALKED PAST

The rain poured over downtown Manhattan like the city was trying to wash away its own sins.

Luxury sedans lined the entrance of the tallest financial tower in the district as CEOs, politicians, and celebrities hurried inside for the biggest charity gala of the year. Cameras flashed. Reporters shouted questions. Everyone wanted to be seen.

Except one man.

He lay motionless on the cold pavement beside a black SUV.

His gray beard was soaked. His worn jacket barely covered his thin body. Blood slowly spread across his shirt as people stepped around him, pretending they hadn't noticed.

"Don't touch him."

"He must be drunk."

"Someone call security."

No one knelt beside him.

No one even asked if he was alive.

At that exact moment, 32-year-old billionaire Ethan Carter stepped out of his limousine. The youngest CEO in America had just signed a billion-dollar merger, and hundreds of cameras instantly turned toward him.

But before Ethan smiled for a single photograph...

He heard a weak whisper.

"...please..."

The voice was barely audible beneath the rain.

Ethan turned and saw the injured homeless man struggling to lift his hand.

His assistants immediately blocked the way.

"Sir, you're already late."

"An ambulance will handle it."

"The media is watching."

But Ethan couldn't explain why his heart suddenly raced.

Something about the old man's face felt strangely familiar.

Ignoring everyone, Ethan removed his expensive coat and covered the stranger.

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

A billionaire in a custom-made suit was kneeling in dirty rainwater beside a homeless man.

The old man slowly opened his eyes.

His lips trembled.

"You... look exactly... like your father..."

Ethan froze.

"My father died thirty years ago," he whispered.

The old man forced a painful smile before losing consciousness.

As paramedics rushed him into the ambulance, Ethan noticed something hidden beneath the torn jacket.

An old military dog tag.

On the back were five words engraved decades ago.

"Return To Michael Carter Immediately."

Michael Carter.

That was Ethan's father's name.

And according to every official record...

His father had never served in the military.
