Chapter 2 - THE MONSTER IN THE SHADOWSThe rain slammed against the tinted glass of the Maybach like bullets. Inside, the quiet hum of the engine was drowned out by Valeria’s ragged breathing. She was curled on the velvet floorboards, shivering violently, her knuckles white as she clutched her mud-stained dress.

Ignacio didn’t look at her immediately. His eyes were fixed on the side mirror, watching the silhouette of Estela fade into the dark, stormy night. But in his mind, time had warped backward twelve years.
That pendant.
A silver, eight-pointed star wrapped in an obsidian serpent. It wasn’t a family heirloom. It was the mark of La Hermandad del Silencio—a secretive, ultra-wealthy cartel of human traffickers and corrupt elites who bought and sold human lives like livestock. It was the exact same symbol engraved on the ring of the man who had dragged his 14-year-old sister, Amelia, into a black van over a decade ago. Amelia had died three months later in an abandoned warehouse, her body broken, her mind completely shattered.
Ignacio’s hands clenched into tight fists, his nails cutting into his palms.
"Sir?" the chauffeur, Mateo, whispered, his voice trembling as he glanced into the rearview mirror. "Should we head straight to the estate?"
"No," Ignacio said, his voice dropping an octave, cold enough to freeze the air in the cabin. "Drive to the safe house in Valle de Bravo. Clear the perimeter. Tell security no one leaves, no one enters."
Valeria flinched at his tone. She pulled herself onto the leather seat, trying to shrink away from the powerful man sitting beside her. Her bruised face was pale, water dripping from her dark hair onto the pristine leather.
"I... I can get out here," Valeria stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "I don’t want to cause trouble for you. Estela... she has powerful friends. Judges, police chiefs... if she finds out I’m with you, she’ll ruin you."
Ignacio slowly turned his head. His dark, sharp eyes locked onto hers. For a moment, Valeria felt a different kind of fear—the fear of a predator looking at prey. But beneath his cold exterior, she saw an ocean of agony.
"She won't ruin me," Ignacio said quietly. "Because she has no idea who I am. But you... you are going to tell me everything. Who is Estela Cruz? And why is she wearing that pendant?"
Valeria swallowed hard, a tear spilling over her bruised cheek. "Estela isn't just my stepmother. She’s a monster. My father was a wealthy real estate developer, but two years ago, he suddenly fell ill. After he died, Estela seized everything—his money, the house, his legacy. But she didn't just want the wealth. She wanted me."
"Why?"
"Because of my father's secret ledger," Valeria sobbed, holding her hands over her face. "Before he died, he gave me a flash drive hidden inside an old pocket watch. He told me it contained proof that Estela was poisoning him... and that she was supplying young women to a high-society syndicate. She found out I had it tonight. She beat me... she was going to lock me in the basement until I gave her the password. I jumped out of the second-story window to escape."
Ignacio’s heart hammered against his ribs. The ledger. The syndicate. It was all connected. Estela wasn't just a cruel stepmother—she was an operative for the very organization that had ruined his life.
Suddenly, Mateo yelled, "SIR! WE HAVE A PROBLEM!"
Ignacio looked up. Ahead on the highway, three black SUVs pulled out from a side road, forming a barricade across the lanes. Bright beams of light blinded them.
Behind them, two more armored vehicles accelerated, boxing the Maybach in at 90 miles per hour!
"They tracked the vehicle's GPS!" Mateo panicked, slamming on the brakes.
Valeria screamed. "It’s them! Estela’s men!"

Ignacio’s expression didn't change, but his eyes flashed with deadly intent. He pulled a heavy tactical pistol from the hidden compartment under his armrest and racked the slide with a crisp clack.
"Mateo," Ignacio commanded coldly. "Hold on to something."
