Chapter 1 - The Portrait’s Secret and the Ghost in the Penthouse

The silence in Matteo Duca’s study felt heavy enough to crush bone.

Cameron Jenkins stared at the framed photograph on the mahogany desk, her pulse hammering against her ribs. The woman in the picture—Sofia—was an absolute mirror image of her. It wasn’t a passing resemblance; it was a biological duplicate. The same slope of the nose, the identical arch of the brow, and the faint, crescent-shaped scar tucked beneath the left jawline.

Cameron reached up with trembling fingers, brushing her own skin right over the exact same spot.

"She was my wife," Matteo said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its previous defensive chill. He walked slowly around the desk, his sharp gaze locked onto Cameron’s face as if searching for a phantom. "For three years, I lived with that face. I watched it laugh, I watched it sleep, and then... I watched it burn. When the police closed the case, they gave me a charred wedding band and a DNA report. They said there was nothing left to bury."

"I am not Sofia," Cameron whispered, her throat dry. "I grew up in Chicago. In a foster system that chewed me up and spit me out. I don't know any Duca. I don't know any wealthy heiresses."

"People don't just share DNA like barcodes, Miss Jenkins," Matteo countered, leaning his palms flat against the desk, towering over her. The raw scent of cedarwood, expensive cologne, and suppressed rage rolled off him. "You walk into my penthouse, you tame a child who hasn't let a living soul touch him in two years, and you wear my dead wife’s face. Do you expect me to believe in coincidences?"

Beside Cameron, three-year-old Leo let out a soft, distressed whimper. The boy buried his face back into the folds of her gray uniform apron, his small fingers twisting the fabric until his knuckles turned white.

"Mama..." Leo muttered again, his voice cracking with a devastation that tore straight through Cameron’s chest.

"He needs an explanation, not a conspiracy theory," Cameron said, her voice sharpening with sudden defensive courage. Despite the throbbing pain in her bruised knee and the aching heat in her shoulder, she refused to cower under Matteo's intimidating aura. "If Sofia was your wife, and she died two years ago... where was I? Why would a billionaire like you not know if your wife had a twin?"

Matteo didn't answer immediately. He straightened up, turned toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering, rain-slicked expanse of Manhattan, and pulled a hidden key from his vest pocket.

"Because," Matteo said coldly, unlocking a secondary, heavily reinforced wall safe hidden behind his father's portrait, "Sofia had secrets she kept even from me. And someone went to extraordinary lengths to ensure her past died with her."

He pulled out a thick, leather-bound dossier stamped with a red, confidential seal. He tossed it onto the desk.

"Read it," Matteo commanded. "That's her file. Or rather, the file of a ghost. Because as of today, Miss Jenkins, you are either the key to the greatest deception of my life... or you are the bait in a trap that’s about to spring."

Cameron hesitated. Her fingers hovered over the cracked leather cover. Outside, a distant rumble of thunder rolled across the Manhattan skyline, shaking the glass of the penthouse as a brand-new storm broke over the city.
