Chapter 5 - The Secret Underground

The heavy fire door of the emergency stairwell slammed shut behind them, cutting off the wailing alarm and plunging the concrete stairwell into absolute, suffocating darkness.
Cameron’s lungs burned with every breath. Her bruised knee throbbed with white-hot agony, but the primal instinct to protect the child in her arms pushed her past the pain. Little Leo clung to her neck, his small body shivering uncontrollably, his face buried deep in her collarbone.
Ahead of them, Matteo moved down the spiral concrete steps with terrifying speed, holding his flashlight in one hand and his sidearm in the other.
"Down to the sub-basement," Matteo panted, glancing back over his shoulder. "There's an unmapped service tunnel built during the Prohibition era that connects this tower to the river docks. It’s our only way out."
"How do you even know about a Prohibition tunnel?" Cameron gasped, her legs feeling like lead as they descended flight after flight of concrete stairs.
"When you control half the shipping ports in the Northeast, you learn every underground exit beneath your properties," Matteo replied grimly, pushing open a heavy iron access door at the bottom of the stairwell.
A wave of damp, cool air hit them instantly, carrying the metallic scent of stagnant river water and engine oil.
They stepped into a narrow, brick-lined tunnel lit only by flickering, battery-operated emergency strips. The walls were slick with moisture, and the sound of dripping water echoed through the long, claustrophobic corridor.
Matteo locked the iron access door behind them, throwing a heavy deadbolt and engaging a magnetic keypad override.
"That will buy us ten minutes," Matteo said, turning to face Cameron and the boy. For the first time since the attack started, his shoulders dropped just an inch, though his eyes remained fiercely alert. He looked down at Leo, who was still trembling in Cameron's arms, then up at Cameron herself. "Are you hurt?"
"I’ll survive," Cameron breathed, leaning her back against the damp brick wall to catch her breath. She looked down at the child and gently stroked his dark curls. "You okay, sweetheart?"
Leo slowly lifted his head, his wide brown eyes blinking in the dim light. He didn't answer with words, but his small hand reached out, gently touching the corner of Cameron's mouth, tracing the exact same curve that haunted Matteo's nightmares.
"Mama..." Leo whispered softly, his voice full of a heartbreaking, innocent hope.
Cameron swallowed hard, her throat tightening with emotion. She didn't correct him this time. Looking at the boy, and then looking up at the dangerous, powerful billionaire standing before her, she realized the terrifying truth: whether she was Sofia's biological twin, a clone, or a pawn in a high-stakes corporate game, her life as an ordinary cleaning lady was gone forever.
"Matteo," Cameron said quietly, stepping forward into the dim light. "Whoever is hunting us... they aren't just after me because I look like your dead wife. They're after something in that dossier, aren't they?"

Matteo stared at her for a long, heavy moment before reaching into his jacket and pulling out a small, encrypted drive—the only item he had managed to salvage from the wall safe.
"They're after the truth about Bellini Pharma's experimental genetics division," Matteo said, his voice hard as iron. "And now that you're holding the key, they won't stop until you're buried right beside the woman you look like."
