Chapter 2 - The Scars We Hide

Cameron flipped open the dossier, her eyes racing across the typed pages, police reports, and medical charts.
The documents painted a terrifying picture. Sofia Bellini hadn't just been a society wife; she had been the sole heir to Bellini Pharmaceuticals, a multi-billion-dollar empire built on biotech and genetic research. According to the autopsy reports from the fiery crash two years ago, the dental records matched, the DNA extracted from the femur bone matched, and the wedding band recovered from the ash was definitively engraved with Matteo and Sofia’s initials.
Case closed.
"If she's dead," Cameron whispered, her voice shaking as she looked up from the papers, "then who am I? Why do I look like her down to the cellular level?"
"Look at page forty-two," Matteo instructed, standing rigidly by the window, his silhouette dark against the flashing city lights.
Cameron turned the heavy pages. There, clipped to a medical appendix, was a birth certificate from a private clinic in Zurich, Switzerland. It wasn't Sofia’s birth certificate. It was a record of a twin birth.
Identical female twins. Born to Elena Bellini. Discharged under separate custody agreements.
"Sofia had a sister," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "A twin kept hidden from the public eye because of family scandals involving experimental neonatal genetics. When the Bellini patriarch died, the family fortune was split. But if a surviving twin exists—an identical heir—she holds fifty percent voting rights in Bellini Pharma. Rights that currently default to me through Sofia's will... unless a primary blood relative steps forward."
Cameron stared at him, the pieces violently clicking together in her mind, forming a picture far darker than she could have imagined.
"You think someone orchestrated the crash," Cameron said, her breath catching. "You think Sofia didn't die at all... or that I was meant to take her place, or take her fall."
Before Matteo could answer, a sharp, piercing beep echoed from the hallway.
It wasn't a standard alarm. It was the high-security override code for the private elevator.
Matteo’s body went completely rigid. In a fraction of a second, all aristocratic composure vanished, replaced by the lethal instincts of a man who ruled empires by out-surviving his enemies. He drew a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a shoulder holster beneath his jacket with terrifying speed.
"Stay here," Matteo ordered, his eyes locking onto the heavy oak study door. "Do not make a sound. If anyone opens this door, you shoot them."
"I don't know how to fire a gun!" Cameron hissed, panic seizing her throat.
"Then use the heavy brass paperweight on the desk," Matteo snapped quietly, slipping out into the dimly lit corridor and pulling the heavy door click-shut behind him.
Inside the quiet study, the only sound was Leo's heavy, exhausted breathing as the toddler finally drifted off to sleep against Cameron's lap.
Cameron sat frozen. Her mind screamed at her to run, to grab the boy, to find the service stairs and disappear into the Manhattan night. But looking down at Leo’s tear-stained face, wrapped securely in her apron, she knew she couldn't leave.

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the hallway, followed by the sickening sound of a muffled scuffle and a harsh, metallic voice hissing:
"Where is she? Where is the girl?"
