Chapter 4 - The Blackout Trap

The crimson glow of the emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the bookshelves of the private study.
"Stay behind me," Matteo commanded, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. He checked the magazine of his weapon with a practiced click-clack that echoed sharply in the quiet room.
"What about Leo?" Cameron asked, panic making her breath catch in her throat as she scooped the three-year-old boy into her arms. Leo woke up with a start, burying his face in her neck and letting out a frightened wail.
"He stays with us. Move," Matteo instructed, leading the way out into the dark corridor.
The penthouse was dead silent, save for the distant, rhythmic klaxon of the building's emergency system. The smart-home panels along the walls were completely dark, stripped of power by what was clearly a high-level external electronic bypass. Whoever had breached the building didn't just pick a lock—they had hacked the entire grid of the luxury high-rise.
Matteo moved like a predator through the shadows, his body angled protectively between Cameron and the open expanse of the central living room.
As they reached the edge of the grand foyer, a sharp sound cut through the air.
Clink.
A small, cylindrical object skidded across the white marble floor from the direction of the private elevator, coming to a dead stop right near Matteo's boots.
"Flashbang!" Matteo roared, grabbing Cameron by the waist and violently pulling her down behind the reinforced mahogany base of the entryway console, shielding Leo beneath his own broad shoulders.
BOOM.
A blinding white flash tore through the darkness, accompanied by a deafening shockwave that rattled the glass windows and sent shards of crystal skipping across the floor. A high-pitched ringing pierced Cameron's ears, and the smell of sulfur and burnt powder instantly filled the air.
Before the ringing in her ears could fade, heavy footsteps thundered across the foyer.
"Clear the sector!" a harsh voice shouted in tactical military-speak.
Two armed figures clad in matte-black combat gear and night-vision goggles stepped out of the elevator shaft, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the room for targets.
Matteo didn't hesitate.
Rising from behind the console with lethal precision, he fired twice. The lead operative crumpled instantly, dropping his weapon with a heavy metallic clatter. The second operative spun around, returning fire, riddling the mahogany console with splintering wood chunks.
Cameron squeezed her eyes shut, holding Leo tightly against her chest, praying the bullets wouldn't pierce their cover.
With a rapid tactical reload, Matteo fired a third shot through the gloom. The second intruder went down, sliding sideways across the slick marble floor.

"Get up! Now!" Matteo urged, grabbing Cameron by the arm and hauling her to her feet. His face was streaked with sweat and soot, his breathing heavy but controlled. "The private emergency stairwell is at the end of the hall. If we don't reach the basement garage in two minutes, we're dead."
They broke into a sprint, dashing through the dark corridors of the penthouse as the distant sound of more boots echoing up the service stairwell signaled that the first wave was only the beginning.
