Chapter 8 - Dawn of a New Empire

Three weeks later.

The penthouse on the Upper East Side was quiet, save for the soft sound of classical piano music drifting from the grand living room.

The shattered crystal on the white marble floor was long gone, replaced by pristine polished stone reflecting the morning sun. At the center of the expansive room, Matteo Duca sat at a low mahogany table, reviewing a fresh stack of federal indictment papers.

The board members who had orchestrated the corporate takeover, the operatives who had breached his home, and the shadowy directors of Bellini Pharma were all behind bars, facing federal conspiracy and human experimentation charges.

Across the room, the private elevator chimed softly.

Matteo looked up.

Cameron stepped out into the penthouse. She wasn't wearing a gray cleaning uniform anymore. She wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit that mirrored the sharp, commanding elegance of a boardroom executive, her gray-blue eyes clear, fierce, and entirely unyielding.

Walking beside her, holding her hand with absolute trust, was three-year-old Leo. The boy looked up at her and smiled, his previous tantrums and dark rages replaced by the bright, happy laughter of a child who finally felt safe.

"The federal prosecutor accepted the settlement," Cameron said, her voice steady and confident as she walked over to Matteo's desk and dropped a signed document onto the wood. "Bellini Pharma's assets have been legally transferred into a charitable trust managed jointly by us. The cloning research division has been permanently dismantled."

Matteo stood up slowly, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of her. The physical resemblance to the woman in the faded photograph was still there, but the ghost was gone. Standing before him was a living, breathing woman who had fought her way out of the shadows and claimed her own destiny.

"You didn't have to take the CEO seat yourself," Matteo said quietly, a faint trace of admiration in his dark eyes. "You could have walked away with enough billions to disappear anywhere in the world."

Cameron met his gaze without flinching, a slight, knowing smile touching the corner of her mouth—the exact same curve that had started it all.

"Disappear?" Cameron said, her chin lifting defiantly. "Why would I run? Someone has to make sure this penthouse stays clean... and someone has to keep you in line."

Leo tugged at Matteo's trouser leg, looking up with big brown eyes. "Papa, look! Mama made pancakes!"

Matteo looked down at his son, then back up at Cameron. For the first time in two years, the cold, impenetrable fortress of the Duca empire felt like a real home.

He reached out, taking Cameron’s hand in his, and smiled.

"Then I suppose," Matteo murmured, pulling them both close, "we have a lot of work to do."
