Chapter 1 - The Weight of SilenceElena did not tear the earbuds from her ears. She did not smash the phone, nor did she let out the scream that clawed fiercely at the back of her throat.

Instead, she stood motionless in the center of the walnut kitchen island, the scent of rosemary and roasted cedar heavy in the air around her, listening to her husband promise another woman the life he had sworn belonged only to her.
"When does she find out?" Vivien’s voice floated through the small black speakers—sugary, light, and dipped in malicious triumph.
Valentino took a slow sip of champagne. A glass chimed softly against a table surface. "She doesn't need to know right now. She’s pregnant, Viv. It’s a fragile time. Let her have her little domestic fantasies in the penthouse while we finish the merger negotiations in peace."
"And after the baby comes?" Vivien persisted, her tone turning petulant. "You promised me, Val. You said once the heir is born and secured under the syndicate, your arrangement with her ends. You're divorcing her, right?"
A heavy pause settled over the line.
Elena stopped breathing. Her hand flattened completely against her seven-month pregnant belly, feeling the tiny, rhythmic kick of her son as if the baby were protesting the venom seeping through the air.
"Of course," Valentino murmured, his voice as calm and routine as if he were scheduling a quarterly board meeting. "It was always a strategic marriage of alliances. Once the boy is under my custody, she’s out. You’ll be the one by my side in Rome, Viv. Just give it a few months."
Elena slowly reached up.
She removed the earbuds from her ears, one by one.
She placed them down on the marble island, right beside the half-empty bowl of clementines.
Her heart did not race. It slowed down, freezing into a solid block of ice. Seven years of loyalty, of standing beside a mafia boss in a world where blood and bullets dictated the rules, of pretending she didn't know what his "logistics company" truly moved—all of it burned away in less than ten seconds.

He didn't just cheat on her. He planned to discard her like a used contract, steal her son, and replace her with the woman who had shared her wine and wept at her bridal shower.
Elena turned around, walked to her mahogany desk in the corner of the study, and picked up a heavy fountain pen.
