Chapter 17 - The Echoes of the PastOne sunny afternoon in May, Elena traveled into Manhattan to inspect the restoration of a historical maritime museum funded entirely by the Vance Philanthropic Trust.

As her security detail cleared the front plaza, Elena paused near a quiet stone bench outside the building.
Sitting on the edge of the bench, wearing a faded gray hoodie and holding a cardboard sign asking for spare change, was a thin, broken man with hollow eyes and a graying beard.
It was Valentino.
He didn't look up immediately. He kept his eyes fixed on the pavement, his hand trembling as he held out a paper cup.
Elena stopped walking. Her security guards paused, waiting for her command.
She stood just a few feet away from him, looking down at the man who had once believed he could rule the world by stepping on everyone beneath him.
Valentino finally raised his head.
His bloodshot eyes locked onto hers.
For three agonizing seconds, the entire world seemed to stop spinning. Recognition flickered across his gaunt face, mixed with profound, soul-crushing humiliation. He opened his mouth, trying to speak, but no sound came out. His lips quivered.
Elena didn't gloat. She didn't spit words of venom, nor did she call out his name.

She simply looked at him—truly looked at him—and realized that the monster who had once terrorized her dreams was nothing more than a ghost of a man who had chosen greed over grace.
She turned her gaze away, adjusted the collar of her designer coat, and walked past him into the sunlit museum.
