Chapter 15 - The Unraveling VerdictTwo weeks later, the jury delivered its verdict.

Evelyn Shaw Moretti, tried in absentia due to her fugitive status abroad, was found guilty on all counts of corporate fraud, extortion, witness tampering, and financial conspiracy. The federal court issued an international red notice for her arrest, freezing every remaining cent of her offshore accounts and permanently dissolving her control over any subsidiary of Moretti Global.
The empire she had built on deception had completely crumbled to dust.
On a chilly Friday evening, Luca and I stood on the balcony of our penthouse, watching the city lights flicker to life across the skyline. The air smelled of rain and approaching winter.
"She’s been located," Luca said quietly, staring down into the street below.
I turned my head, studying his profile against the amber glow of the city. "Where?"
"Switzerland," he replied, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "An upscale private clinic near Zurich. Her health has deteriorated rapidly over the past month. The stress of the indictment, the loss of her assets, the public humiliation... it finally caught up to her."
"Are you going to go?" I asked, my voice neutral.
Luca turned to look at me, his dark eyes steady. "No. I sent word through our legal team that any medical expenses will be covered by the trust, out of basic human decency. But as for me... my life isn't there anymore. It's right here."
He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was lighter now, stripped of the old demands and expectations that had suffocated us a decade ago.
"You've changed, Luca," I murmured, leaning into his touch almost against my will.
"You forced me to," he smiled faintly. "You didn't let me hide behind my money, my titles, or my mother's shadow. You made me look at the monster I was allowing myself to become."
Before I could answer, the balcony door slid open behind us, and Noah and Amara came barreling out into the cold air, wrapped in giant puffy winter coats, shouting about hot chocolate and movie night.
"Mom! Luca! Hurry up, the popcorn is burning!" Noah yelled, tugging impatiently on Luca’s jacket.
Luca laughed, scooping Noah up onto his shoulders while Amara grabbed my hand, pulling us both inside away from the chill.

As we walked back into the warm, brightly lit living room, surrounded by laughter, half-finished homework assignments, and the chaotic beauty of a real family, I realized something profound.
The past could not be rewritten. The scars would always remain, jagged reminders of a war we never asked to fight. But love—true, hard-earned, unyielding love—wasn't about a clean beginning. It was about what you chose to build when the smoke finally cleared.
