Chapter 17 - The Unwritten PageSpring arrived with a sudden, violent burst of green, washing away the winter slush and breathing fresh life into the city.

By March, the transition of Moretti Global into the Carter-Moretti Philanthropic Trust was officially complete. The corporate shark tank that had once devoured families was now funding community housing, architectural scholarships for underprivileged youth, and legal aid programs for victims of corporate coercion.

My boutique architectural firm had expanded, landing a massive city commission to redesign the waterfront district—a project I was leading alongside a newly certified, independent consultant: Luca Moretti.

On a bright Saturday morning, we stood on the windy observation deck of the half-completed waterfront park, looking out over the sparkling East River.

"Are you sure about this layout?" Luca teased, leaning against the steel railing, pointing at my blueprint tablet. "Because my structural calculations suggest your curves might defy physics."

"My curves have never defied physics, Luca," I shot back with a razor-sharp, playful smile. "They just exceed your limited imagination."

He laughed, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me against his side. "Fair point. You've been exceeding my imagination for ten years."

Down on the lower promenade, Noah and Amara were racing each other toward the ice cream cart, their laughter carrying across the breeze, completely untouched by the shadows of our past.

Luca watched them for a long moment, his expression softening into something deeply tender and reverent.

"You know," Luca murmured quietly, resting his chin on top of my head, "seven years ago, when I walked away from you in that kitchen, I thought my life was a masterpiece of control and success."

"And instead, it was a house of cards," I supplied softly.

"Exactly," he agreed, tightening his grip around me. "You taught me that a real life isn't built on control, or power, or what people expect you to be. It's built on truth. On resilience. On loving the person standing beside you even when the world is burning down around your ears."

I turned in his embrace, looking up into those dark, amber-flecked eyes that had once terrified me, but now felt like home.

"We made a lot of mistakes, Luca," I whispered, reaching up to cup his sharp, familiar jawline. "We burned down a lot of bridges to get here."

"Yes, we did," he smiled, leaning down until his forehead rested gently against mine. "But look at what we planted in the ashes."

I looked past him toward the gleaming, sunlit skyline of the city we had both conquered—not by destroying each other, but by surviving together.

The story of Nia Carter and Luca Moretti hadn't started with a fairy tale. It had started with a lie, a heartbreak, and a billionaire who had underestimated the woman standing in front of him. But as his lips met mine in the warm spring sunlight, I knew the ending was entirely ours to write.
