Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushThree days later, the corporate tower of Moretti Global loomed overhead like a monolithic fortress of glass and steel. For years, I had watched it from a distance, building my own small architectural firm from the ground up, turning raw talent into a multi-million-dollar boutique enterprise. I was no longer the timid, twenty-two-year-old housewife who trembled at the sound of Luca's footsteps.

I stepped out of the elevator on the top floor, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal pantsuit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase.
The receptionist looked up, her eyes widening in immediate recognition. Word travels fast in the high-society gutters of the city; the internet was already buzzing with blind items about billionaire Luca Moretti’s dramatic restaurant meltdown and his mysterious, estranged ex-wife.
"Ms. Moretti—Nia—you can't just walk in here," the receptionist stammered, scrambling for her desk phone.
"Save your breath," I said smoothly, not breaking stride. "Luca is expecting me. He just doesn't know it yet."
I pushed open the heavy mahogany double doors of the primary executive boardroom.
The room went dead silent. Seated around the massive glass conference table were six members of the board of directors, alongside Evelyn Shaw Moretti, who sat at the head with a face carved from ice. At the opposite end sat Luca. He looked exhausted, dark shadows bruising the skin beneath his eyes, his tie slightly loosened.
When our eyes met, Luca stood up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the polished hardwood floor.
"Nia," he breathed, his voice catching.
"Sit down, Luca," I commanded, my voice carrying the effortless authority of a CEO addressing her inferiors. I walked toward the center of the table, placing my briefcase down with a sharp clack.
Evelyn narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? Security will have you removed immediately."
"Try it, Evelyn," I replied, turning my gaze slowly toward her. "And watch how fast the remaining shares of Moretti Global dump into my newly acquired portfolio by noon."
A murmur rippled through the board members. One of the senior directors leaned forward, adjusting his glasses. "Excuse me, Mrs. Moretti... or Ms. Carter. What are you talking about?"
I opened my briefcase, pulling out a thick sheaf of legal documents and tossing them across the polished glass toward the center of the table.
"Seven years ago, when your golden boy forced me into a rapid, coerced divorce under threat of financial ruin and social exile, your legal team made a critical administrative error," I said, a thin, razor-sharp smile touching my lips. "They buried a conditional contingency clause in the prenuptial asset distribution. A clause stating that if any undisclosed, legitimate heirs to the Moretti bloodline were to materialize within ten years, all transferred secondary assets would revert entirely to the maternal party, alongside a controlling twenty-five percent voting stake in the parent company."
Luca stared at the documents, his face draining of all color. "That’s... that’s impossible. My mother’s lawyers drafted that ironclad."
"Your mother’s lawyers were arrogant," I corrected softly, resting my palms on the edge of the table and leaning in. "Just like you were. They thought I was a naive girl from a working-class family who would take a meager payout and disappear into the shadows."

I stood up straight, letting my eyes sweep across the stunned faces of the board.
"Gentlemen, allow me to introduce myself properly. I am Nia Carter. And as of this morning, I am your new majority voting partner. Welcome to your worst nightmare."
