Chapter 5 - The Confession in the DarkThat evening, the rain began to lash against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse apartment. The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and neon through the wet glass.

I was standing in the kitchen pouring a glass of sparkling water when I heard the soft chime of the private elevator bell echoing in the foyer.
My heart skipped a beat.
I walked out slowly, keeping my footsteps light, my hand slipping into the pocket of my cardigan where my phone was already dialed to emergency services.
The private foyer doors parted.
Luca stood there, completely drenched. Rainwater plastered his dark hair to his forehead, dripping off the sharp line of his jaw. His expensive suit was ruined, wrinkled and heavy with water. He looked less like a titan of industry and more like a shipwreck survivor washed ashore.
"How did you get up here?" I demanded, standing firmly in the doorway of the kitchen. "The security code was changed this afternoon."
"I bought the building, Nia," he said quietly, his voice hollow. He took a step inside, tracking water onto the pristine hardwood floor. "An hour ago. I had the building management override the system. I needed to see you. Just you. Without the board, without my mother, without the lawyers."
"Get out, Luca. Before I call the police."
"Call them," he whispered, taking another step forward, dropping his keys onto the entryway table with a heavy thud. He fell to his knees right there on the hardwood floor, sinking into the puddle of rainwater pooling around his shoes.
I froze, breath catching in my throat. Luca Moretti—the man who never bowed to anyone, the man who had crushed corporate competitors without blinking an eye—was kneeling at my feet.
"Luca, what are you doing? Get up."
"No," he choked out, burying his face in his hands. His broad shoulders shook violently as a sob finally broke through his iron-clad control. "No, I won't get up. I’ve spent seven years standing tall while my entire life was built on a foundation of lies and ashes. My mother lied to me, Nia. She drove you away. She orchestrated the whole thing because she thought you weren't 'pure' enough for the Moretti bloodline. And I let her. I was weak. I was arrogant, and I believed what I wanted to believe because it was easier than fighting my own mother."
I stood frozen, watching the man who had broken my heart finally shatter completely beneath the weight of his own sins.
"I lost you," he wept softly, the sound tearing through the quiet apartment. "And now... now I find out I lost my children too. The best parts of me, walking around this world, and I wasn't there for their first steps, their first words, their first fevers... My God, Nia. How do you look at me and not kill me?"
"Because killing you would mean you still matter enough to affect my pulse," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. But as I looked down at him, the hardened armor around my heart cracked just a fraction.
"Give me a chance," he pleaded, looking up, his dark eyes swimming with unshed tears. "Just one chance to prove I'm not the coward I was seven years ago. Supervised visits, legal constraints, whatever you want. Just don't keep them from me."
Before I could answer, a small voice broke the silence from the hallway.
"Mom? Who’s crying?"

We both froze.
I turned my head to see Noah standing rubbing his eyes, clutching his favorite stuffed bear, staring wide-eyed at the strange man kneeling on our floor.
