CHAPTER 2 — The CEO Ignored Everyone
The ballroom doors swung open.
Camera flashes exploded like fireworks.
Everyone stood to applaud.
"Mr. Adrian Sterling is here!"
The billionaire CEO entered surrounded by executives, investors, and bodyguards.
People rushed forward hoping for a handshake.
Some practiced their smiles.
Others adjusted expensive watches, eager to impress the man whose signature could make—or destroy—a fortune overnight.
But Adrian didn't look at a single one of them.
Instead...
His eyes searched the room desperately.
Almost as if he had spent years looking for someone.
Then he froze.
Standing near the exit...
Still clutching the old photograph...
Was the elderly woman security had been trying to remove.
His face turned pale.
The confident billionaire suddenly looked like a frightened little boy.
Without saying a word...
He began walking toward her.
The crowd assumed he was about to ask security why they had allowed such an embarrassment into the gala.
The hostess smiled proudly.
"I'll have her removed immediately, sir."
Adrian didn't even hear her.
Step after step...
He crossed the silent ballroom.
The old woman looked up.
Their eyes met.
Tears instantly filled hers.
She whispered,
"You've grown so much..."
Then, before anyone could understand what was happening...
The most powerful businessman in the country stopped in front of her...
Dropped to both knees...
And wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Mom..."
"I finally found you."
The entire ballroom fell silent.
Champagne glasses slipped from trembling hands.
Someone screamed.
The hostess nearly collapsed.
The businessman who had mocked her moments earlier turned ghost white.
But Adrian wasn't finished.
Still holding the old woman's hands, he slowly stood and faced the crowd.
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
"Every single person who laughed at this woman..."
"...has just insulted the person who sacrificed everything so I could stand here today."
The silence became unbearable.
Then the old woman quietly said something that made Adrian's smile disappear.
"No, Adrian..."
