CHAPTER 8 — The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

The DNA report revealed a truth that stunned everyone.

Thirty-six years earlier, Eleanor had not given birth to one child...

She had given birth to twins.

A boy.

And a girl.

The hospital records had been altered.

Richard had taken Adrian.

But someone else had taken the baby girl.

Eleanor collapsed into a chair.

"I had a daughter..."

"...all this time?"

Samuel nodded with tears in his eyes.

"I wanted to tell you."

"But Richard made me swear to protect the secret until he could fix his mistakes."

Adrian could barely breathe.

"I've had a sister my whole life..."

"And she has no idea we exist."

The final document inside the chest contained only one clue.

A faded adoption certificate.

No names.

No address.

Only a handwritten sentence.

"She was sent west to protect her from those who wanted the company."

Weeks turned into months.

Private investigators searched every state.

No trace.

Then, one cold autumn morning, Eleanor received a handwritten letter with no return address.

Inside was a photograph.

A woman in her mid-thirties stood beside a small farmhouse, smiling with two young children.

Around her neck hung a silver locket.

The exact same locket Eleanor had worn in the only surviving photo of her twins.

On the back of the photograph were just seven handwritten words:

"I think you're looking for my mother."

Eleanor's hands trembled so violently that she almost dropped the picture.

Adrian looked at the smiling woman.

For the first time in his life...

He wasn't searching for the past anymore.

He was about to meet the sister he never knew existed.

But neither of them realized...

Someone else had seen the photograph first.

And that person was determined to make sure the family would never be reunited.
