CHAPTER 7 — The Stranger Who Knew the Truth

Three months passed.
The scandal had shaken the entire country.
Hawthorne Corporation had transformed into a symbol of honesty under Adrian's leadership.
For the first time in decades, employees smiled when they came to work.
Eleanor spent most of her days quietly volunteering at a small community kitchen instead of living in the mansion everyone expected her to move into.
She said only one thing whenever reporters asked why.
"I've spent my whole life being poor."
"I don't need a palace to feel rich."
One rainy afternoon, an elderly man arrived at the soup kitchen.
He wore an old military jacket and walked with a wooden cane.
The moment he saw Eleanor...
He froze.
Tears filled his eyes.
"Eleanor..."
She looked up slowly.
The spoon slipped from her hand.
"Samuel?"
Adrian, who had just arrived to pick up his mother, watched in confusion.
"Mom... who is he?"
Samuel smiled sadly.
"I was your father's best friend."
The room fell silent.
Samuel reached into his coat and carefully placed a small rusted key on the table.
"I promised Richard I would never give this to anyone..."
"...unless the truth finally came out."
Adrian picked up the key.
Attached to it was a faded tag.
Storage Unit 27.
Samuel looked at Eleanor.
"Your husband wasn't only hiding money."
"He spent years collecting proof that he wanted to confess everything."
"He knew he was dying."
"But someone stopped him before he could tell the world."
Adrian's heart began racing.
"You mean..."
Samuel nodded.
"Richard didn't die with all his secrets."
"He left one final message."
The next morning, Adrian, Eleanor, and two lawyers opened the forgotten storage unit.
Inside sat dozens of dusty boxes.
Old videotapes.
Diaries.
Business ledgers.
Family photographs.
But in the center of the room...
There was a single locked wooden chest.
The rusty key fit perfectly.
As Adrian lifted the lid...
His face turned completely white.
Inside was a DNA report...
Along with a tiny pink baby bracelet.
The name engraved on it wasn't Adrian.
It read:
"Emily Hawthorne."
Eleanor whispered in disbelief,
May you like
"I only had one child..."
Then whose bracelet was this?
