Chapter 5 - The Snake in the GrassSmoke billowed from the crumpled hood of the truck. Mercenaries poured out, returning fire into the darkness. Anna moved like a ghost through the shadows, taking down two attackers with surgical efficiency.

As the third mercenary fell, Anna advanced on the cab to secure Miller. But before she reached the door, a cold barrel pressed firmly against the back of her head.

"Don't move, General," a familiar voice whispered in her ear.

Anna froze. "Lieutenant Trent?"

"I'm sorry, Anna," Trent said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Miller pays ten times what the Inspectorate offers. The syndicate controls the entire regional command structure. You were never meant to leave this assignment alive."

Miller crawled out of the wrecked passenger seat, wiping blood from his forehead, a twisted smile returning to his face. "Did you really think an arrogant recruit like you could pull down an empire, Vance? You thought you caught me, but you walked right into our web."

Miller walked over, taking Anna's sidearm from her holster and kicking her to her knees. He grabbed her short, jagged hair, pulling her head back just as he had done on the parade ground.

"You should have stayed in your office, little girl," Miller hissed, raising his gun to her forehead. "Any last words?"
