Chapter 4 - The Shadows Gather

As Julian was dragged out of the building by security, crying and pleading, Leo stood alone in the dark service bay beneath the main showroom. The smell of oil, metal, and rubber filled his lungs, bringing him a sense of peace that no executive suite ever could.
He walked up to the underside of the red hypercar, which was now raised on a hydraulic lift. Flashlight in hand, he began inspecting the titanium suspension arms.
"You handled him well, brother," a smooth, dark voice echoed from the shadows of the garage.
Leo didn't turn around. He kept inspecting the bolts. "I told you not to come here, Victor."
Out of the darkness stepped Victor Vance—Leo’s older half-brother and the Deputy CEO of Vance Global Holdings, the massive parent corporation that secretly owned controlling shares in several elite Italian hypercar brands. Victor was dressed in a three-piece Savile Row suit, holding a silver walking cane despite having no limp.
"You always were too dramatic, Leo," Victor said, clicking his cane against the concrete floor. "Dressing up like a grease monkey just to test a prototype? You could have sent a team of junior engineers. You almost got yourself beaten up by a low-level salesman."
"A machine doesn't lie to you, Victor. People do," Leo said, wiping his hands on a rag and finally facing his brother. "And I don't trust your junior engineers. I found a flaw in the steering column specs sent from the factory yesterday. Someone altered the telemetry data."
Victor’s eyes narrowed slightly. "A glitch in the software, no doubt."
"No," Leo said, his voice dropping an octave. "It wasn't a glitch. It was intentional. If this car hit two hundred miles per hour on a track, the front axle would lock up instantly. The driver would die. Who ordered the change to the CAD files, Victor?"
A long, suffocating silence stretched between the two brothers under the humming fluorescent lights.

Victor’s calm demeanor didn't shatter, but a cold, calculating spark flickered in his eyes. "You're paranoid, Leo. You spent too many years in isolation designing engines."
"Am I?" Leo asked, stepping closer. "Because the only person with the master encryption key to override my design files... is you."
