Chapter 20 - A Quiet Evening in TribecaThe sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the New York sky in deep shades of violet and amber.

The penthouse was quiet. The emergency with Marcus Vance had been handled swiftly, quietly, and entirely behind closed doors—just another ripple in the ongoing war to protect what I had finally learned to value.

I was standing in the kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee, when the service door clicked open.

Maya walked in, carrying her coat and handbag. She looked surprised to see me still up at this hour.

"Mr. Foster—I mean, Daniel," she corrected herself with a soft laugh, setting her bag down on the counter. "I thought you had a late board dinner tonight."

"Cancelled," I said, handing her a fresh mug of coffee. "Decided I'd rather stay in."

Maya took the mug, leaning back against the counter and looking at me with a knowing smile. "You look tired. Did something happen today?"

"Nothing that hasn't already been taken care of," I replied, leaning beside her. "Just wrapping up some old business."

She sipped her coffee, looking out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering lights of the city below. "You know, when I first started working here, I thought you were the coldest man on earth. I thought you only cared about numbers, properties, and profit margins."

"And now?" I asked quietly, turning my head to look at her.

Maya turned as well, her dark eyes meeting mine with a warmth that completely cut through the chill of the Manhattan night.

"Now," she whispered, a gentle smile touching her lips, "I know you're the only man in this city who actually knows what real strength looks like."

I didn't say anything. I simply raised my coffee mug in a silent toast to the skyline, knowing that for the first time in my life, the ledger was balanced—not in cold ink, but in a future we were finally building together.
