Chapter 21 - The Aftermath of the SyndicateThe fallout from Marcus Vance’s failed maneuver hit the European financial markets with seismic force. By Monday morning, Vanguard Global Holdings was facing emergency insolvency proceedings across London, Zurich, and Frankfurt. The sudden evaporation of their core intellectual property portfolio—Project Apex—triggered a domino effect of margin calls that their institutional backers couldn't cover.

I sat in my Tribeca study, watching a financial news segment on mute as red ticker tape scrolled across the bottom of the screen.
Frank walked in, tossing a fresh stack of encrypted audit summaries onto my desk.
"The Swiss banking regulators have formally frozen Vance's personal accounts pending a criminal inquiry into unauthorized foreign asset manipulation," Frank reported, leaning against the edge of the bookshelf. "And the SEC has officially closed its preliminary review of our foundation, clearing every asset transfer with a clean bill of health."
"And Vance himself?" I asked, not looking away from the monitor.
"Boarded a red-eye back to London last night," Frank said with a faint smirk. "Word is, he's liquidating his London estate just to pay his legal defense retainers. His career as a corporate raider is officially over."
I nodded slowly, closing the laptop lid. The shadow that had hung over the foundation—and over families like Maya's—was finally, completely erased. The syndicate that had tried to turn children's biological dependencies into an eternal annuity had been dismantled from the inside out.
"Good," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "Let's keep the focus on expansion. I want the municipal partnership agreements extended to three more hospital networks in upstate New York by the end of the quarter."

"Consider it done," Frank replied as he turned to leave. "Oh, and Daniel? Maya is downstairs wrapping up the weekly inventory. She wanted to know if you'd be joining them for dinner tonight."
I paused at the door, a slow, genuine smile breaking through my customary professional reserve. "Tell her I wouldn't miss it for the world."
