Chapter 9 - The Tables Turn“Federal agents! Drop your weapons or be executed on sight!”

A barrage of smoke grenades and tear gas flooded the underground chamber. The Outfit mercenaries shouted in confusion, stumbling blindly through the white fog as elite tactical teams swarmed into the crypt from every direction.
In the sudden chaos, Marcus tried to pivot his revolver toward Gabriel, but Gabriel moved with lightning speed. He lunged forward, kicking the gold-plated gun out of Marcus’s hand and sending the old man crashing hard against the ancient stone sarcophagus.
“It’s over, Uncle Marcus,” Gabriel breathed, pressing his boot onto Marcus’s chest, pinning him to the floor.
Vivian shrieked as two federal agents tackled her to the stone ground, slapping heavy steel cuffs around her wrists with brutal efficiency. Cole, bleeding heavily from his shoulder wound, tried to crawl toward the exit, only to have a tactical boot step firmly onto his good arm.
“Secure the perimeter!” a voice barked through the comms. “All suspects in custody!”
Through the thick, swirling smoke of tear gas, a tall figure stepped into the center of the crypt. It wasn’t a federal agent. It was a woman wearing a tactical bulletproof vest, her dark hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, carrying an assault rifle with casual precision.
She walked right up to Gabriel, lowered her goggles, and smiled.
Gabriel stared at her, his breath catching in his throat. His chest rose and fell rapidly as if he had just surfaced from a deep ocean.
“Caroline?” Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his entire life.
May you like
Caroline Whitaker wiped a smudge of soot from her cheek, offering him a warm, ironic smile. “Did you really think a little kidnapping and a fake funeral could get rid of me that easily, Gabe?”
Gabriel didn’t hesitate. The invincible mob boss, the man who hadn’t cried in thirty years, dropped to his knees, pulled his wife into a fierce, suffocating embrace, and buried his face in her shoulder as the cathedral above them finally fell silent.
