Chapter 15 - The Uncle's Trap

With her hand trembling, Grace picked up the tape recorder and pressed play.

A raspy, cruel voice filled the vault room—the distinct voice of Silas Miller, recorded ten years ago:

"Vincent is too soft," Silas's voice sneered through the speaker. "He won't go to war with Moretti. Push him off the bridge tonight, make it look like a suicide, and blame Dominic Moretti. Vincent's little girl will spend the next decade turning herself into a lethal weapon against the Morettis. When she finally kills Dominic, we step in and take both empires."

The tape ended with a harsh static hiss.

Grace stood frozen, the flashlight slipping from her grip and smashing against the floor, casting long, terrifying shadows across her pale, horror-stricken face. Her entire life—her decade of suffering, her ruthless sacrifices, her cold heart—had been built on a lie manufactured by the man she trusted most.

"No..." she whimpered, backing away until her spine hit the concrete wall. "No, no, no... Uncle Silas... he loved my father..."

"He loved your father's wealth," I said softly, standing up and stepping into the dim light. "Silas used you as a guided missile to destroy my family, Grace. And now that you've handed him the master key to the combined Moretti-Miller assets, you are no longer useful to him."

Before Grace could reply, the heavy blast doors of the vault slammed shut with an iron crunch, locking us inside.

Over the vault's intercom system, a cold, mocking laugh rang out.

"Brilliant deduction, Dominic," Silas Miller's voice boomed through the speakers. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to survive that paralytic dose. But it doesn't matter now. Both heirs to the two greatest fortunes in eastern America are locked inside a air-tight vault four floors below the water table."

"Silas!" Grace shrieked, slamming her fists against the iron door. "You monster!"

"Goodnight, my sweet niece," Silas chuckled. "The oxygen pumps have just been reversed. You have twenty minutes before you both fall asleep forever."
