Chapter 1 - The Broken Ring and the Cold RealityGrant Calloway’s hand hovered between them, holding the gold ring engraved with tiny ivy leaves.

The weight of it hung heavy in the dimly lit hallway of the Briar Glen estate. Outside, a light autumn rain began to tap against the tall French windows, a rhythmic, haunting percussion that mirrored the sudden pounding in Evelyn’s chest.
"Is this the one you're giving Vanessa?" Evelyn asked again, her voice steady despite the strange ache blooming behind her ribs.
"Yes," Grant muttered, his jaw tightening. "Vanessa wants everything traditional. She thinks using my mother’s ring for the ceremony will play well in the society columns. But... I don’t know. Something feels wrong about it."
"It’s a family heirloom," Evelyn said, keeping her gaze strictly professional. She forced her hands to remain at her sides, away from the temptation to reach out and touch the metal that had belonged to the only mother Grant had ever loved. "She’s joining the family. It makes sense."
"Does it?" Grant looked at her searchingly, his dark eyes stripping away the years of professional distance they had carefully cultivated. "Nothing about this wedding feels like family, Evelyn. It feels like a corporate merger. A public relations triumph."
"You chose her, Grant."
"Did I?" He let out a harsh, dry laugh. "Or did society choose her for me? A billionaire cannot be seen alone, they say. I needed a woman who fit the aesthetic of Calloway Living. Vanessa looks the part. She plays the part."
"And yet," Evelyn whispered, stepping back as footsteps echoed down the hall. "She is the woman you are marrying in eleven days. You must honor that."
Grant closed the velvet box with a sharp snap. "Sometimes, Evelyn, your practicality makes me want to scream."
"That is why you pay me a senior house manager's salary," she replied, offering a faint, melancholic smile before turning away.
She did not see the dark shadow detach itself from the doorway of the drawing room across the hall.
Vanessa Hale had heard every word.
Her manicured fingernails dug into the fabric of her cream sweater until the knuckles turned white. Her face, usually a masterclass in pristine socialite composure, twisted into something venomous and ancient.
A corporate merger. She looks the part. You pay me.
Vanessa had spent three years building her fortress of ice and elegance, positioning herself as the undisputed queen of Grant Calloway’s empire. She had endured his absences, managed his public image, and swallowed her pride when his eyes drifted toward the quiet woman who made his coffee.
She had tolerated Evelyn because Evelyn was invisible. A piece of the furniture. A fixture of the estate just like the grandfather clock in the foyer.

But today, Vanessa realized the terrifying truth: the furniture had a heartbeat, and Grant was listening to it.
"Eleven days," Vanessa whispered to the empty hallway after Grant had left for his office. Her lips curved into a cruel, calculating smile. "That’s plenty of time to redecorate."
