Chapter 2 - The SetupThe trap was laid with surgical precision.

Two days after the conversation in the hallway, Evelyn received an urgent notification on her staff tablet. It was a digitally signed purchase order for a rare batch of antique French terracotta tiles—the exact imported material Grant had been obsessing over for the conservatory renovation.
The delivery location was listed as an old storage depot thirty miles north of Manhattan, near Briar Glen. The note attached, supposedly from Grant’s executive assistant, read: Warehouse manager insists on cash-on-delivery inspection. Take the petty cash lockbox and verify the pallet before signing. Grant needs these cleared by noon.
It was entirely plausible. Grant was notorious for last-minute site inspections.
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She signed out the lockbox containing five thousand dollars in emergency contractor funds, grabbed her coat, and drove her aging sedan out of the Calloway estate under the gray, brooding New York sky.
When she arrived at the abandoned farmhouse, she knew immediately something was wrong.
There were no delivery trucks. No pallets of terracotta. Just a sprawling, desolate structure surrounded by overgrown weeds and dead silence.
She stepped out of her car, holding her phone aloft. Zero bars of service.
Before she could turn back toward her vehicle, the heavy wooden door behind her creaked open. Two masked figures moved with terrifying speed. Before she could scream, a heavy burlap sack was shoved over her head, and a pair of industrial zip-ties bit savagely into her wrists.
When she woke up, she was strapped to an old wooden chair in the freezing center of the derelict farmhouse.
And standing before her, peeling off a pair of heavy leather gloves, was Vanessa Hale.
The ivory cashmere coat was immaculate. The blonde hair was flawless. But the eyes looking down at Evelyn were completely dead.
"Did you really think you were irreplaceable?" Vanessa had asked, her voice dripping with venom as she paced around the chair. "You clean his house, Evelyn. You brew his coffee. You think because he confides in you, you've earned a seat at my table?"
"Vanessa..." Evelyn had gasped, her lungs burning from the cold and the terror. "Grant will... he will find out."
"Grant is currently three hours away in Boston attending a mandatory real estate symposium," Vanessa laughed, a cold, melodic sound that chilled Evelyn to the bone. "His phone is currently sitting in a glass of water on my nightstand. By the time he realizes anything is amiss, you will be nothing more than a tragic missing person case. A disgruntled former employee who stole five thousand dollars of company cash and ran away."
"You're insane," Evelyn whispered.
"I am practical," Vanessa corrected, stepping close enough for Evelyn to smell her expensive perfume. "I am securing my future. And you are a loose thread that needs to be snipped."
For six days, the nightmare continued.
No food. Barely any water. The bitter cold seeping through the rotting floorboards of the abandoned farmhouse. Vanessa visited daily, not to torture her with physical violence, but to watch her spirit break, to savor the slow erasure of the woman Grant secretly loved.

And now, on the sixth day, the end had arrived.
Vanessa stood over her with the rope in her hands, offering that final, cruel illusion of mercy: “Any last wish before you leave?”
