Chapter 4 - The Confrontation“VANESSA!”

The roar shook dust from the ceiling beams.
Vanessa froze, the rope slipping from her trembling fingers. Her ivory cashmere coat was splashed with dust, her polished facade cracking instantly into sheer, unadulterated panic.
Evelyn’s fading eyes shifted toward the doorway.
Grant Calloway stood there like an avenging angel from a dark myth. Rain dripped from his dark hair, mud coated his tailored pants, and his mother’s gold ring was clenched so tightly in his fist that his knuckles were stark white.
For one suspended second, nobody breathed.
Grant looked at Evelyn. At the raw, ugly bruises circling her delicate throat. At her bare, freezing feet tied to the splintered wood of the chair. At the hollow, starving shadows under her cheekbones.
Then his gaze shifted to Vanessa.
The transformation in his face was terrifying. The disciplined, brilliant billionaire CEO vanished, replaced by a predator driven by a cold, murderous rage.
"What did you do?" Grant’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of an avalanche.
Vanessa stumbled backward, her manicured hands raised defensively. "Grant! Thank God—you found us! Some... some criminals, they ambushed us, they took the cash, they tried to—"
"Shut up," Grant said.
The two words dropped like lead weights on the floorboards.
Grant didn't look at her lies. He crossed the room in three massive strides, dropping to his knees beside Evelyn’s chair. With trembling fingers, he pulled a pocket knife from his trousers and sliced through the industrial zip-ties binding her wrists.
"Evelyn," he choked out, his voice cracking as he caught her falling body before she hit the floor. "Look at me. I've got you. I'm right here."
Evelyn leaned against his chest, her eyes fluttering open. The warmth of his body felt like a miracle against her frozen skin. "You... you came," she rasped.
"I'm not going anywhere," he vowed, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss into her damp hair.
Vanessa watched them, her face twisting into an ugly, mask-like grimace of betrayal and hatred. "She's a servant, Grant! A common employee! You're going to throw away our entire life, our wedding, our status, for her?"
Grant slowly rose to his feet, leaving Evelyn gently propped against the base of the chair. He turned around, his eyes locking onto Vanessa with a gaze so frigid it could freeze fire.
"Status?" Grant stepped toward her, forcing her back until her spine hit the peeling plaster wall of the farmhouse. "You thought this was about status, Vanessa? You thought I was building an empire just to display you like a trophy on a mantelpiece?"
"We are power partners!" Vanessa screamed, hysteria breaking through her pristine voice. "We belong together!"

"You belong in a prison cell," Grant snarled. He pulled out his satellite phone, dialed a direct number, and spoke with absolute, chilling finality. "Get the legal team, private security, and the state police to coordinates on Route 9. My fiancée attempted murder. And make sure the media gets every single detail before the hour is out."
Vanessa’s knees buckled. The ice queen had melted into ash.
