Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the PastTwo weeks after Vanessa’s arrest, the legal fallout began to ripple through the upper echelons of Manhattan finance.

Grant’s corporate rivals at Vanguard Real Estate saw blood in the water. Sensing vulnerability amid the widespread tabloid coverage of the failed wedding and attempted murder scandal, Arthur Sterling—the ruthless CEO of Vanguard—made his move.
A hostile takeover bid was launched against Calloway Living.
At 8:00 AM on a crisp Tuesday morning, the executive boardroom on the 42nd floor of the Calloway Tower buzzed with anxious executives. Financial reports flashed across giant LED screens. Share prices had dipped 4.2% following the cancellation of the high-profile wedding and the sudden disappearance of Vanessa Hale from public life.
Grant stood at the head of the conference table, his expression like carved granite.
"They're buying up our commercial debt packages through shell companies," chief financial officer Marcus Vance reported, sweat beading on his forehead. "If Sterling acquires another three percent of our voting shares by Friday, he can force an emergency board restructure. He’ll strip you of your majority voting rights, Grant."
"Let him try," Grant said coldly. "Sterling doesn't know the first thing about our regional healthcare portfolio. He’ll run it into the ground within six months."
"He doesn't care about running it," a smooth, chilling voice interrupted from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Standing in the entrance was Victoria Vance—not Marcus’s relative, but Vanessa Hale’s former legal counsel and a fierce corporate raider in her own right. She wore a razor-sharp crimson suit and a smile that promised total destruction.
"Arthur Sterling wants the Calloway land bank in Briar Glen," Victoria announced, stepping into the room uninvited. "And I represent the remaining stakeholder interests of Vanessa Hale. Did you forget, Mr. Calloway? Vanessa still holds a twelve percent silent equity stake in Calloway Living through her family trust. A stake she has just transferred directly to Vanguard Real Estate in exchange for full legal defense funding."
The room went dead silent.
Twelve percent. Combined with Sterling’s hostile acquisitions, that gave them enough leverage to legally freeze the company’s assets and strip Grant of his CEO status by the end of the week.
Marcus paled. "My God... she’s still attacking you from inside her jail cell."
Grant didn't blink. His jaw clenched, and the dark fire in his eyes flared back to life. He opened his mouth to issue a counter-directive, prepared to liquidate his personal assets to fight them in court.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open.
A pair of polished heels clicked softly against the Italian marble floor.
Every head turned.
Evelyn Harper walked into the boardroom.

She wore a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit that commanded immediate authority. Her posture was erect, her dark hair swept back in a flawless chignon, and in her hands, she carried a thick leather-bound dossier bearing the official seal of the Calloway family trust.
"You forgot something, Ms. Vance," Evelyn’s voice rang out, clear, calm, and absolute.
