Chapter 10 - The Queen Takes the Board

My blood ran cold. The entire marriage—every birthday, every anniversary, every tender moment after the birth of our children—had been a calculated execution of a corporate takeover plot.

Grant hadn't just fallen out of love with me. He had never been in love with me. I was merely a target on a ledger.

I stared at the signatures on the yellowed paper. My father’s signature was missing, replaced by the signature of his bitter rival, Richard Sterling—Grant’s father.

"They set this up before my father died," I whispered, the weight of the realization crashing down on me like a tidal wave. "Grant was sent to isolate me."

"Yes," Arthur said solemnity. "But Grant made a mistake. He thought you were as weak as your father was gentle. He didn't realize you had inherited your grandfather’s sharp business mind."

I looked out the window of the high-rise apartment at the city lights blinking through the rain. The pain of the betrayal was sharp, but inside me, something far colder and stronger took its place. The sadness was gone. The hurt was gone. All that remained was absolute clarity.

Grant thought he had brought his mistress into my home to finish me. He thought he had trapped me in a narrative of his own creation.

Instead, he had walked directly into the trap I had spent six months laying for him.

Two days later, I stood in the glass-walled boardroom of Sterling & Vance Holdings. Grant was brought in from the holding facility wearing a orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at his waist. He looked broken, sleep-deprived, and utterly defeated.

When he saw me sitting at the head of the conference table, surrounded by six senior partners and the District Attorney, his eyes widened in horror.

"Mara..." he rasped, his voice hollow. "Please... talk to them. Tell them this was a misunderstanding."

I looked at the man I had once shared a bed with, the man who had tried to steal my life and my children.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply pushed a thick stack of papers across the mahogany table toward his public defender.

"This is the settlement agreement, Grant," I said smoothly, my voice echoing off the glass walls. "You surrender all rights to the Sterling name, all claims to the family trust, and full legal and physical custody of Owen and Lily. In exchange, I won't press charges on the federal extortion counts."

Grant looked at the paper, then up at me, tears welling in his eyes. "You took everything from me..."

"No, Grant," I replied, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "I took back what was mine. You destroyed yourself the day you mistook my silence for weakness."
