Chapter 5 - The Blue Lights on the Driveway

Grant rushed toward the front door, looking out the stained-glass side windows. Red and blue lights were already flashing through the trees lining the driveway, reflecting sharply off the manicured lawn.
"You called the police on me?!" Grant roared, turning around with wild, bloodshot eyes. "In front of my kids?! You psychotic bitch!"
"I didn't call the police about the car, Grant," I said, shielding Owen and Lily behind me as he stepped closer. "I called the District Attorney’s Office two hours ago. They’re not here for a domestic disturbance."
The heavy oak front door was suddenly knocked on three times—loud, authoritative, and unyielding.
Julian took a step back, looking toward the kitchen exit, but two uniformed state troopers were already visible through the patio doors, cutting off any escape.
"Grant Sterling?" a deep voice barked from outside.
Grant stood frozen in the center of the foyer, his eyes darting frantically between his mother, his mistress, and me. The invincible facade he had spent years constructing was crumbling into dust right in front of the audience he had chosen.
"Open the door, Grant," Evelyn commanded, her voice suddenly devoid of all warmth. Her face had turned as pale as chalk as she stared at her son. "Open the door right now."
When Grant didn't move, I stepped forward, reached past him, and pulled the front door wide open.

Three officers and a man in a dark suit holding a thick badge folder stepped inside. The lead investigator didn't even look at me; his eyes locked directly onto Grant.
"Grant Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny," the investigator announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
