Chapter 2 - The Guest Suite Belongs to No One

"What are you talking about?" Grant whispered, though his voice lacked conviction. He tried to look into the suitcase, but I snapped the lock shut with a heavy sound that made Owen jump behind me.
"You brought Tessa here tonight because you thought tonight was your grand finale," I said, stepping forward until I was standing inches from him. "You thought that by parading your mistress in front of your mother and brother, you would push me to scream, throw something, or hit you. You needed me to be violent so your lawyer could file for an emergency custody order tomorrow morning."
Grant’s chest heaved. He didn't deny it. He couldn't.
"It was a good plan," I continued, offering him a faint, cold smile. "Except for one minor detail. You assumed I was reacting to you. I stopped reacting to you the moment I realized you were stealing from your own children’s trust fund to pay for Tessa’s high-rise apartment on Fifth Street."
"Shut your mouth," Grant growled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the doorframe. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh, but I do," I replied, pulling Lily’s little pink backpack over my shoulder while keeping Owen’s hand firmly in mine. "And as for the guest suite? The one you so grandly offered to your mistress twenty minutes ago?"
Grant narrowed his eyes. "What about it?"
"This house doesn't belong to you, Grant."
"Don't be ridiculous! We bought this place together!"
"No," I corrected him smoothly, stepping past him into the hallway. "We bought it using my grandfather’s estate money. The deed was placed into a private trust before our wedding. A trust that explicitly states if you commit an act of marital infidelity documented by legal counsel, your occupancy rights are revoked immediately without notice."

I turned to face him in the hallway, the kids standing quietly behind me like two little soldiers who knew the drill.
"Tessa isn't staying in the guest suite tonight," I said. "And neither are you."
