Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Empire

I thought signing the settlement in that glass boardroom was the final chapter. I thought watching Grant dragged away in handcuffs meant the nightmare was over.

I was wrong.

Three days after Grant surrendered full custody and forfeited his claims to the Sterling trust, a certified black envelope arrived at my private residence. No return address. No stamp. Just my maiden name written in precise, calligraphic ink: Mara Vance.

Inside was a single printed sheet containing a court summons from the Northern District Court of Illinois, accompanied by a heavy silver key.

Richard Sterling—Grant’s ruthless father, the billionaire founder of Sterling Global Enterprises who was supposed to be living in quiet exile in Chicago—had just filed an emergency petition to invalidate our settlement. His legal team claimed that Grant was mentally incompetent at the time of signing due to extreme psychological distress, and that as the ultimate chairman of the master fund, Richard was seizing immediate control of all asset trusts, including the estate my grandfather had left for Owen and Lily.

Below the court summons was a hand-written note from Richard himself: “My son was foolish enough to underestimate you, Mara. I am not. You took Grant down in a day, but you are playing in my arena now. Bring the key to the Chicago Summit, or I strip your children of every cent by Friday.”

I held the silver key against the light. Grant hadn't been acting on his own ego. He was just a weapon created by a monster far more dangerous.
