Chapter 16 - The Chicago Gala

The grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hotel in downtown Chicago was blinded by sparkling crystal chandeliers and flashbulbs. Over five hundred of the country’s most powerful investors, politicians, and real estate tycoons were gathered in evening gowns and tuxedos.

At the center stage stood Richard Sterling. At sixty-eight, he looked imposing, silver-haired, impeccably dressed, and radiating absolute power.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard announced into the microphone, his resonant voice commanding the room. "Tonight marks a historic day for Sterling Global. After years of negotiation, we are officially merging with Vance Logistics, bringing the visionary legacy of the late Arthur Vance under our protective umbrella."

The crowd applauded politely. The massive digital screen behind him displayed a legal contract ready for digital authorization.

"Before I sign this document," Richard smiled, raising a golden pen, "I want to pay tribute to my former associate, Arthur Vance, whose tragic passing six years ago taught us all how fragile life can be—"

"Save your crocodile tears, Richard."

The voice echoed clearly through the loudspeakers, cutting through the music and applause like a thunderclap.

The room went dead silent. Hundreds of heads turned toward the grand entrance of the ballroom.
