CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Ryan Thought Was Dead

Ryan's mother stepped out of the black SUV wearing an elegant navy coat.

The crowd fell silent.

Even the police officers instinctively moved aside.

Her name was Evelyn Carter—a billionaire philanthropist who hadn't appeared in public for nearly five years. Rumors claimed she was terminally ill. Others believed she had quietly retired overseas.

Ryan stared at her in disbelief.

"Mom... you're alive?"

Evelyn looked at him with heartbreaking disappointment.

"I was never dead, Ryan."

She slowly turned toward Emily.

"I'm sorry I came too late."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You knew?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I suspected Ryan was stealing from the family trust months ago. That's why I disappeared. I needed to find out who was helping him."

Her cold gaze shifted toward Sophia.

"And now I know."

Sophia tried to remain calm.

"You can't prove anything."

Evelyn smiled.

"Oh, but I can."

She snapped her fingers.

A second SUV pulled into the parking lot.

Two forensic accountants stepped out carrying locked metal cases.

Behind them came Ryan's former financial advisor—in handcuffs.

Ryan's face drained of color.

"No..."

The detective frowned.

"Who is he?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"The man who helped Ryan move nearly $180 million out of the Carter Family Trust."

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

Ryan shook his head wildly.

"He's lying!"

The accountant opened one of the cases.

Inside were bank transfers, offshore account records, fake contracts, and security footage showing Ryan and Sophia meeting secretly with the advisor.

Every transaction had been recorded.

Every signature had been verified.

Sophia's confidence vanished.

She slowly backed away.

Ryan glared at her.

"You told me you destroyed all of this!"

Sophia snapped back.

"I did! Someone copied the files!"

Evelyn stepped closer.

"No, Sophia."

"I ordered every document duplicated the day I realized someone inside my family was stealing from me."

Ryan looked completely broken.

Everything he had planned for years was collapsing in front of his eyes.

But then...

The accountant removed one final envelope from the case.

"This," he said, "is the document Mr. Carter wanted burned first."

Evelyn opened it carefully.

The moment she read the first page...

Her hands began to tremble.

Emily noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Evelyn slowly lifted her eyes.

Her voice cracked for the first time.

"Ryan..."

"...you were never my biological son."

The world stopped.

Ryan's knees gave out beneath him.

"No..."

Evelyn closed the folder with tears streaming down her face.

"I adopted you when you were three years old..."

"...because your real parents died in a fire."

Then she whispered the sentence that left everyone frozen:

"The person who started that fire... has been standing beside us this entire time."
